Chapter 5 - THE FINAL CONFRONATION

The flames licked the dry pine walls, spreading with terrifying speed. Thick, black smoke began to fill the cabin, burning my eyes and throat.

"Marcus!" I screamed through the smoke.

Through the haze, I saw Marcus and Daniel wrestling on the floor. Daniel was fighting with the strength of a madman, clawing at Marcus's face, trying to drag him into the growing fire.

I didn't have time to help him.

The flames were creeping closer to the wooden table where the babies were. Noah and Nora’s cries had turned into desperate, high-pitched shrieks of terror.

I dropped my weapon, threw my jacket over my face, and charged through the wall of heat.

The air was scorching, singing my eyebrows and hair. I reached the table, grabbed the laundry basket containing both babies, and hugged it tight against my chest.

"I've got you," I gasped, my throat burning from the toxic smoke. "I've got you."

I turned to run back toward the door, but a burning ceiling beam collapsed with a thunderous crash, blocking the exit.

We were trapped.

"Rachel! The window!" Marcus yelled. He had managed to knock Daniel unconscious with a heavy blow to the jaw. Marcus was bleeding from a cut above his eye, but he was already moving toward me, shielding his face from the intense heat.

Marcus grabbed a wooden chair and smashed it through the glass window on the side of the cabin.

"Go! Go!" he roared.

I didn't hesitate. I climbed through the shattered window, protecting the basket with my own body as we tumbled onto the damp grass outside.

Marcus scrambled out right behind me, dragging Daniel's limp body by the collar of his shirt.

Just seconds later, the cabin’s roof collapsed inward in a spectacular shower of sparks and roaring flames.

I lay on the grass, gasping for fresh air, clutching the basket tightly. Noah and Nora were coughing, but they were breathing. They were alive.

Sirens wailed in the distance, their red and blue lights finally cutting through the dark forest.

Marcus collapsed next to me, breathing heavily. He looked at the babies, then at me. "Are you okay?"

"We're okay," I whispered, my voice cracking. I looked down at the two tiny faces looking back up at me through the smoke-stained light. My biological children. My babies.

But as the police cruisers and fire trucks pulled into the clearing, a sleek, black sedan parked right behind them.

The door opened.

A tall man in a tailored dark suit stepped out. He didn't look like a police officer. He looked like an executive.

He walked past the deputies, past the firefighters, straight toward Marcus and me.

"Captain Rachel Vance?" the man asked, pulling a badge from his pocket. "I am Agent Miller, FBI Criminal Investigation Division. We've been tracking your husband's financial transactions for the past six months."

I frowned, still holding the babies. "I thought this was a local embezzlement case."

"It was," Agent Miller said, his face completely expressionless. "Until we discovered where the money was coming from. Your husband wasn't just taking private loans, Captain. He was selling military logistics data. Classified shipping routes, supply chain details out of Fort Bragg. He was selling them to foreign buyers."

My heart stopped.

"And your sister, Emily," Agent Miller continued, looking toward the police car where Emily was currently being loaded in handcuffs. "She wasn't just a surrogate, Rachel. She was the courier. She made three trips to Europe last year under the guise of 'vacations.' She was delivering the encrypted drives."

I stared at the agent, the world spinning around me once again.

The betrayal didn't stop at my marriage, my home, or my eggs.

My husband and my sister were traitors.

And they had used my military clearance, my home, and my very identity to mask a treasonous espionage ring.
