Chapter 6 - THE COUNTER-ATTACKThree days after Maya’s successful surgery, while my daughter was sleeping peacefully in her hospital bed, my phone buzzed violently on the bedside table.

It wasn't a call from Robert. It was an email from his high-priced corporate defense attorney, bearing a subject line that made my blood run cold: EMERGENCY CUSTODY PETITION & NOTICE OF INTENT TO DISCHARGE PATIENT.
My hands trembled as I opened the PDF attachment and began to read.
Robert wasn't just rolling over and accepting defeat. Cornered like a cornered rat, he had decided to fight back using the only weapon he had left: pure, unadulterated manipulation and financial dominance.
The petition claimed that I—the mother—was suffering from a severe psychological breakdown, was experiencing “hysterical delusions,” and was actively alienating our daughter from her loving father.
Worse still, Robert had somehow convinced a private family court judge to sign an emergency order authorizing him to discharge Maya from Riverside Medical Center and transfer her to a private, out-of-state facility of his choosing—a facility where he would have total control over her medical records, her visitors, and her narrative.
Before I could even process the sheer audacity of the document, the door to Maya’s room banged open.
Two large, intimidating private security guards marched in, flanked by Robert’s smug attorney and Robert himself, who walked in wearing a tailored suit, looking every bit the cold, calculating corporate predator.
“What are you doing here?” I demanded, immediately stepping in front of Maya’s bed to shield her. “Get out of this room right now before I call hospital security!”
“Don't bother wasting your breath, Elena,” Robert’s attorney said smoothly, flashing a shark-like grin as he held up a stamped court order. “We have a judge’s signature. Mr. Vance retains full legal guardianship authority over medical decisions, and we are exercising our right to transfer the patient immediately.”
Maya woke up at the commotion, staring at her father with wide, terrified eyes. “Dad? What are you doing? Go away!”
“Quiet down, Maya, daddy is just taking care of you,” Robert said, putting on a sickeningly sweet, paternal facade as he stepped toward the bed. “You’re coming with me to a much better hospital. Your mother isn't well; she’s losing her mind.”
“You’re a monster!” Maya screamed, trying to sit up, which caused her fresh surgical stitches to pull tight, making her gasp in agony.
“Stay away from her!” I yelled, lunging toward Robert with my fists raised.
The two private guards instantly grabbed my arms, pinning me back against the wall with brutal force. I thrashed and screamed, but I was entirely powerless against them.

Robert smiled—a cold, victorious smirk—and stepped right up to Maya’s bedside, reaching out to grab her hospital blanket.
“Pack her things,” Robert ordered the guards. “We’re leaving right now.”
