Chapter 2 - The Golden Cage CrumblesThe lobby of the Heights District building smelled faintly of expensive eucalyptus and expensive betrayal. As my mother, Donna, leaned against my shoulder, trembling from the shock, the security guard—a kind man named Marcus who had known me for years—looked at us with wide eyes.

"Mrs. Coleman? Are you alright? Do you need me to call the police?"
"No, Marcus," I said, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of the warmth Michael had taken for granted for three years. "Not yet. But please lock the service elevator. And if anyone from Apartment 1204 asks, my legal team will handle all communications from this moment forward."
Marcus swallowed hard and nodded. He had seen my corporate ID badge enough times to know that when I used that tone, empires fell.
We drove straight to a boutique hotel downtown. While Donna rested, sipping chamomile tea and letting the physical shock subside, I sat at the mahogany desk with my laptop open. The doorbell-camera footage was playing on a loop. Every frame was a masterpiece of legal devastation. Hattie kicking the basket. Hattie yanking the chain. Michael striking me across the face without a single question.
My phone buzzed. It was a text message from Michael:
“Have you lost your absolute mind? You humiliated my mother, threw a tantrum, and walked out like a spoiled child. Hattie is still shaking. You have two hours to come back, get on your knees, and apologize to both of us. If you don't, don't expect me to ever forgive you.”
I stared at the screen, a dry, humorless laugh escaping my lips. Forgive me. He genuinely believed he held all the cards. He still thought I was the quiet, submissive wife who managed his households while letting him play the head of the household.
He had forgotten a crucial detail: The apartment was deeded entirely in my name. Purchased three years before we even met, using my pre-marital corporate equity. Furthermore, the architectural firm where Michael worked as a "design manager"? It was a subsidiary of a massive real estate holdings group. A group where my company held a controlling stake.
I opened a new email draft and addressed it to Victor Vance, my senior partner and managing counsel.
Subject: URGENT: Comprehensive Asset Freeze and Corporate Audit – Coleman & Associates.
Victor, Effective immediately, I am initiating full dissolution proceedings for my marriage, alongside an immediate freeze on all joint financial channels, supplementary household allowances, and corporate sub-contracting ties associated with Michael Coleman. Please prepare an emergency eviction notice for Apartment 1204, citing breach of residency terms and harassment. I want Hattie out within forty-eight hours.
Attached is the security footage. Let them see what kind of family they are trying to rob.

Victor’s reply came within three minutes: “Consider it done, Penelope. Shall I ruin him slowly, or all at once?”
I typed back: “Let’s start with a public awakening.”
