Chapter 1 - THE ACCUSATION IN SILENCE

The silence hanging over the terrace of Le Jardin was heavier than a tombstone.
Water soaked through Evelynâs faded canvas shoes, mixed with shattered glass that glittered under the soft candlelight. Her body shook uncontrollably. On one hand, she had the cold, terrifying presence of Victor Haleâa man whose single phone call could ruin livesâand on the other, a tiny pair of arms wrapping around her waist with desperation that felt hauntingly familiar.
"Mommy! Mommy, don't leave me again!" Sophie wailed, her tear-streaked face buried deep into the pocket of Evelynâs stained apron.
Victor Haleâs imposing frame towered over both of them. His customary icy composure had cracked, revealing raw, chaotic panic. He didn't look at the ruin of expensive crystal on the floor. He looked at Evelyn's eyesâemerald green, completely identical to the shade of the small eyes looking up at her right now.
"Security," Victorâs voice rasped out, barely above a whisper, yet it rang louder than a thunderclap across the silent courtyard. "Clear the restaurant. Now."
Within ten seconds, heavy-set men in charcoal suits moved with terrifying efficiency. Diners who had been craning their necks to catch a glimpse of the cityâs most elusive billionaire were swiftly ushered out, their unpaid bills forgotten. The heavy iron gates slammed shut, isolating the terrace from the outside world.
"Mr. Hale, please," Evelyn stammered, stepping back, but Sophie refused to let go, dragging along the floor. "I swear on my life, I have never seen your daughter before tonight! Iâm just a server. I started working here three weeks ago!"
"Then explain it," Victor demanded, taking a heavy step forward. His shadow swallowed her whole. "My daughter was born with severe aphasia and brain trauma. For three years, top neurosurgeons from London to Tokyo told me she would never speak a word. She has never called anyone 'Mama'. Not even my late wife."
Evelyn felt the air leave her lungs. "Your late wife?"
"Elena," Victor whispered, his eyes narrowing to razor-sharp slits. "She died in childbirth three years ago. The exact same night you claim your baby died."
Evelynâs head began to spin. Two years ago? No, she had said two years, but her memory of that dark, stormy night in St. Judeâs Charity Hospital was hazy, clouded by high fever and sudden trauma. The doctors had handed her a cold, breathless bundle wrapped in white and told her to sign the death certificate before sedating her.
"What is your full name?" Victor asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and agonizing hope.
"Evelyn... Evelyn Vance," she breathed.
Victor reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out his phone, and typed rapidly. A few seconds later, his hand went completely limp. The phone slipped through his fingers and crashed onto the table.
On the lit screen was an old medical file from St. Judeâs Hospital.
PATIENT: EVELYN VANCE
PROCEDURE: SURROGATE DELIVERY / C-SECTION
STATUS: CHILD DECLARED STILLBORN
PAYEE: HALE ENTERPRISES
"You..." Victorâs voice cracked. "You weren't just a patient. You were the surrogate my family paid to save the Hale bloodline."
Before Evelyn could comprehend the terrifying truth, the side doors of the VIP elevator hissed open. A woman in an immaculate red suit walked out, her high heels clicking loudly against the marble.
It was Victoria HaleâVictorâs ruthless older sister and the executive chairwoman of Hale Global.
"What is the meaning of this circus, Victor?" Victoria sneered, looking down at Evelyn with absolute disgust. "Why are the doors locked? And why is that filth holding my niece?"

Sophie lifted her head from Evelyn's apron, pointed a trembling finger at Victoria, and shrieked in horror:
"BAD LADY! SHE PUT MOMMY IN THE DARK BOX!"
