CHAPTER 1 — The Day the Mansion Became a Prison

The first thing Valentina noticed wasn't the heat.
It was the silence.
Not the peaceful silence she remembered from the days when her mother used to sing while baking fresh sweet bread in the kitchen.
This silence felt different.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Like the entire mansion was holding its breath.
Outside, the July sun scorched Zapopan, Jalisco, with a relentless intensity. The elegant Mediterranean-style estate shimmered beneath the blazing sky, its marble fountains sparkling like diamonds while expensive imported palm trees barely moved in the suffocating air. The digital thermometer mounted near the garden entrance flashed 100°F (38°C).
Inside the mansion, the air conditioning hummed softly.
Yet eight-year-old Valentina still felt cold.
Fear had a way of doing that.
She tightened the blanket wrapped around her ten-month-old baby brother Santiago as he rested against her shoulder. Tiny drops of sweat covered his forehead despite the cool air. He hadn't stopped crying since early morning.
"It's okay," she whispered, rocking him gently.
"I'm here."
The words sounded comforting.
She didn't believe them herself.
Only one year earlier, everything had been different.
Her mother, Elena, had filled every room with warmth.
Sunday mornings smelled like cinnamon, vanilla, and fresh pan dulce.
Music drifted through the halls while her father laughed louder than anyone else.
There had been bedtime stories.
Birthday cakes made by hand.
Family movie nights where everyone squeezed together under one blanket.
Then cancer arrived.
It stole Elena slowly.
Cruelly.
And when she finally passed away, something inside the mansion died with her.
For months afterward, Valentina watched her father, Alejandro Mendoza, disappear into endless business meetings. As owner of one of Mexico's fastest-growing construction companies, he convinced himself that work would numb the pain.
Instead...
It created the perfect opportunity for someone else.
Six months later...
Paulina entered their lives.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Sophisticated.
Every magazine in Guadalajara called her the perfect businessman's wife.
Charity galas adored her.
Luxury brands invited her to exclusive events.
Social media worshipped her polished smile and designer gowns.
She knew exactly which camera angles made her appear compassionate.
She donated to children's hospitals.
She posed with orphanages.
She posted inspirational quotes every Sunday.
Millions believed she was an angel.
Only two children knew the truth.
The moment photographers disappeared...
So did her smile.
"You walk too loudly."
"You breathe too much."
"Why are you always looking at me?"
"Stop making that baby cry."
Every sentence became another reason for punishment.
Valentina quickly learned the rules.
Never answer back.
Never cry where Paulina could see.
Never tell Daddy.
Especially never tell Daddy.
Because somehow...
Paulina always knew exactly what to say before Alejandro returned home.
"Valentina had another tantrum."
"She refuses to listen."
"I'm doing my best, but your daughter still hasn't accepted me."
Alejandro always sighed.
Always looked exhausted.
Always hugged Valentina before rushing to another meeting.
"I know it's difficult, sweetheart."
"Please try to be nicer to Paulina."
Those words hurt more than any punishment.
Because they meant he didn't see.
He couldn't see.
Or maybe...
He simply didn't want to.
Meanwhile, Santiago had become almost entirely Valentina's responsibility.
Changing diapers.
Preparing bottles.
Putting him to sleep.
Reading picture books while rocking him for hours.
She was only eight years old.
But every morning she woke up feeling like someone's mother.
That afternoon, Santiago whimpered again.
His cheeks glowed bright red.
"It's too hot," Valentina whispered.
She remembered seeing a large glass pitcher of cold hibiscus tea inside the kitchen refrigerator.
Daddy always said staying hydrated mattered during extreme heat.
Maybe...
Just maybe...
A little cold juice would help her brother stop crying.
She carefully carried Santiago on one hip while reaching for the oversized crystal pitcher with both trembling hands.
It was heavier than she expected.
Cold condensation coated the smooth glass.
Her tiny fingers slipped.
"No..."
The pitcher crashed against the marble floor.
CRASH!
The explosion echoed through the mansion.
Brilliant red hibiscus tea spread across the polished white tiles like blood.
Hundreds of crystal shards flew in every direction.
Santiago screamed.
Valentina dropped to her knees immediately.
"I'm sorry..."
"I'm sorry..."
"I'm sorry..."
She grabbed paper towels with shaking hands.
One sharp fragment sliced deeply across her palm.
Blood poured instantly.
She gasped.
But she ignored it.
Paulina could never see this mess.
Never.
Then...
Click.
Click.
Click.
The unmistakable sound of expensive designer heels echoed through the hallway.
Every step grew louder.
Closer.
Until the kitchen doorway darkened.
Paulina stood there.
Perfect makeup.
Silk designer dress.
Diamond earrings sparkling beneath the lights.
And eyes colder than ice.
For several seconds...
She simply stared.
Not at the blood.
Not at the terrified baby.
Not at the frightened little girl.
At the broken crystal pitcher.
Slowly...
Her lips curled into a smile.
Not the smile she showed at charity events.
Something much darker.
Something that made Valentina's heartbeat stop.
"What..."
Paulina whispered almost calmly.
"...did you just do?"
Valentina immediately lowered her head.
"I'm sorry."
"I tried to get Santiago something cold because he—"
SLAP!
The sound exploded through the kitchen.
Valentina crashed sideways onto the floor.
Her cheek burned.
Her ears rang.
The room spun around her.
"You worthless little parasite!"
Paulina screamed so loudly that Santiago began choking on his own sobs.
"Do you have any idea how much that crystal cost?"
Valentina pressed one hand against her bleeding face while the other desperately reached for her crying baby brother.
"I'm sorry..."
"I'll clean everything..."
"I promise..."
"You'll do much more than that."
Paulina grabbed Valentina's arm so violently the little girl cried out in pain.
Ignoring the blood still dripping from her cut hand, she dragged both children through the hallway toward the back door.
The blazing sunlight hit them like fire.
The concrete burned beneath Valentina's bare feet.
Near the far end of the backyard stood something almost forgotten.
An old rusted kennel once used for Alejandro's Doberman years before.
The dog had died long ago.
The cage remained.
Covered in rust.
Dust.
Spider webs.
Its metal roof trapped heat like an oven.
"No..."
Valentina whispered.
"Please..."
Paulina opened the rusty gate.
Shoved Santiago inside first.
Then threw Valentina after him.
The little girl hit the metal floor hard while desperately shielding the baby from the impact.
"Please don't..."
"It's too hot."
"Santiago needs water."
"He'll get sick."
Paulina leaned down until her face was inches away.
Then she whispered words that would haunt Valentina forever.
"If either of you faints..."
"...maybe your father will finally understand how much easier my life would be without children."
CLANG!
The heavy iron door slammed shut.
A thick steel padlock clicked into place.
The sound echoed like a prison sentence.
Valentina immediately grabbed the bars.
"Please!"
"I'll never break anything again!"
"I promise!"
Paulina slowly removed a pair of oversized sunglasses from her designer handbag.
Placed them on her face.
Smiled.
Then walked calmly back toward the mansion without looking back once.
Within minutes...
The inside of the metal kennel became unbearable.
The roof grew so hot it could burn skin.
The metal bars scorched anyone who touched them.
Santiago's cries weakened.
His tiny body felt hotter every minute.
Valentina removed her own shirt and held it above his head, desperately trying to create a little shade.
It wasn't enough.
The baby stopped crying.
That terrified her even more.
"Santiago..."
"Please..."
"Don't go to sleep."
She hugged him tighter.
Tears streamed endlessly down her face.
She screamed until her throat became raw.
No one answered.
No servants came.
No neighbors heard.
The massive walls surrounding the millionaire estate swallowed every desperate cry.
After what felt like an eternity...
A distant mechanical sound echoed from the front entrance.
The enormous electric gates began opening.
A black armored SUV rolled silently into the driveway.
Inside the vehicle...
Alejandro Mendoza frowned.
He hadn't planned to come home.
A canceled meeting had changed everything.
As he stepped out of the SUV, something immediately felt wrong.
The mansion was strangely quiet.
Too quiet.
Then...
Almost too faint to hear...
A tiny voice floated across the scorching backyard.
"Daddy..."
Alejandro froze.
He knew that voice.
And somewhere above the garden...
Hidden beneath the decorative roofline where no family member had ever bothered to look...
A forgotten security camera was still recording.
Every second.
Every scream.
Every lie.
And before the sun set...
May you like
It would capture the evidence that would destroy one of the most respected women in high society forever.
