CHAPTER 2 — The Cry That Stopped a Millionaire's Heart

Alejandro Mendoza had negotiated billion-dollar contracts without ever losing his composure.
He had stared down ruthless competitors, survived financial crises, and built one of Mexico's largest construction empires from almost nothing.
But nothing in his life had prepared him for the sound he heard that afternoon.
"D...Daddy..."
The voice was barely audible.
Weak.
Broken.
For a second, he thought he had imagined it.
He stood motionless beside his black armored SUV, his briefcase still hanging from one hand. The luxurious estate was unusually quiet. Too quiet.
Normally, Santiago's cheerful babbling echoed through the gardens while Valentina chased butterflies around the fountains.
Today...
Nothing.
Only the faint hum of the air-conditioning units.
And then...
"Daddy..."
This time there was no mistake.
Alejandro's heartbeat exploded.
"Valentina?"
No answer.
He rushed toward the front entrance.
The housekeeper, Rosa, suddenly appeared in the foyer, looking startled.
"Señor Mendoza... I didn't know you were coming home."
Alejandro barely looked at her.
"Where are my children?"
Rosa hesitated.
"They're... they're resting."
Something about the way she avoided eye contact sent a chill through him.
"Resting where?"
"I... I think Señora Paulina took them upstairs."
Alejandro frowned.
He had just crossed the entrance hall.
No one was upstairs.
No footsteps.
No crying.
Nothing.
Then...
A soft metallic sound drifted through the open kitchen window.
Clang...
Clang...
Like tiny hands striking old iron.
He stopped walking.
Every instinct screamed that something was terribly wrong.
Without another word, he ran through the kitchen and out the back door.
The heat outside slammed into him like an open furnace.
His expensive leather shoes pounded across the stone patio.
"VALENTINA!"
No response.
"SANTIAGO!"
Still nothing.
He searched around the swimming pool.
The garden.
The playground.
The gazebo.
Empty.
Completely empty.
Then...
Another tiny sound.
"Daddy..."
It came from the far corner of the property.
Near the abandoned kennel.
Alejandro turned.
His blood froze.
Inside the rust-covered metal cage...
He saw movement.
He sprinted faster than he had in years.
Every step felt impossible.
Every second lasted forever.
When he reached the kennel...
The world stopped.
Valentina was curled against the burning metal floor.
Her face was swollen.
One cheek carried the unmistakable outline of a handprint.
Blood had dried across her tiny palm.
Her lips were cracked from dehydration.
She held Santiago against her chest with every ounce of strength she had left.
The baby wasn't crying anymore.
His little body barely moved.
His breathing was frighteningly shallow.
Alejandro dropped to his knees.
"Oh my God..."
His hands shook violently as he grabbed the bars.
"Valentina!"
The little girl slowly opened her eyes.
For one heartbreaking moment...
She smiled.
A weak...
Relieved...
Exhausted smile.
"You came..."
Those two words shattered him.
He pulled desperately at the locked door.
It wouldn't move.
He yanked harder.
Nothing.
The heavy industrial padlock held firm.
"Stay with me!"
He searched his pockets.
No keys.
His breathing became frantic.
He looked around wildly before grabbing a landscaping shovel leaning against a nearby tree.
With all his strength...
CRASH!
The shovel slammed into the lock.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Metal sparks flew across the dry grass.
Finally...
The rusted hinge snapped.
The door burst open.
Alejandro threw the twisted metal aside and gathered both children into his arms.
The heat pouring from inside the kennel felt like opening an oven.
He almost dropped Santiago in horror.
The baby's skin was burning.
His tiny shirt was soaked with sweat.
His eyes barely opened.
"Call an ambulance!"
Alejandro screamed toward the mansion with a voice so loud that every servant froze.
"NOW!"
Rosa came running outside.
One look at the children made her cover her mouth in horror.
"My God..."
Alejandro wrapped both children inside his expensive suit jacket, desperately trying to shield them from the sun.
"What happened?"
Valentina's lips trembled.
She looked toward the mansion.
Fear instantly filled her eyes.
"Daddy..."
"It's okay."
"No..."
She began shaking uncontrollably.
"She'll get angry..."
Alejandro felt something inside him break.
"No one is going to hurt you again."
For several seconds...
Valentina simply cried.
Then, almost in a whisper...
"It was only an accident."
"What accident?"
"I dropped the juice."
Alejandro stared at the broken cut on her hand.
"The pitcher slipped."
"I tried to clean it."
"I didn't want anyone to be mad."
His chest tightened.
"And then?"
Valentina hesitated.
She looked terrified.
Finally she whispered...
"Paulina said we needed to learn a lesson."
Alejandro couldn't breathe.
"No..."
"She locked us here."
"She said..."
Valentina stopped speaking.
"What did she say?"
Tears rolled down her face.
"She said maybe if Santiago got sick..."
"...you wouldn't need us anymore."
Everything around Alejandro went silent.
The birds.
The wind.
The servants.
The world itself.
He slowly stood.
Still holding Santiago.
His face had lost every trace of color.
At that exact moment...
Paulina stepped gracefully onto the backyard terrace wearing a fresh white linen dress and oversized sunglasses.
She carried a glass of iced lemonade.
As if nothing had happened.
She looked mildly surprised.
"Oh?"
"You're home early."
Alejandro turned toward her.
His eyes were unlike anything she had ever seen.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Pure disbelief.
Paulina glanced casually toward the children.
Then laughed softly.
"Oh, honestly..."
"I was just teaching them responsibility."
"They were only outside for a few minutes."
Alejandro stared at her.
Then looked down at Valentina's swollen face.
The dried blood.
The burns on Santiago's tiny hands.
The rust stains covering their clothes.
Nothing matched her story.
Nothing.
An ambulance siren echoed in the distance.
Paulina crossed her arms confidently.
"You know how dramatic children are."
"They exaggerate everything."
For a terrifying moment...
Alejandro almost believed her.
After all...
For months...
He always had.
But fate had already begun moving against her.
Hidden beneath the edge of the mansion's roof...
A forgotten security camera had captured the entire afternoon.
Every slap.
Every scream.
Every second inside the kennel.
The footage had already been automatically uploaded to the home's cloud security system.
Neither Paulina...
Nor Alejandro...
Had any idea that the truth was already waiting to be discovered.
And within the next twenty-four hours...
May you like
One notification on a forgotten phone would destroy the perfect life Paulina had spent years creating.
