CHAPTER 3 — The Security Alert No One Was Supposed to See

The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Paramedics worked frantically over ten-month-old Santiago as oxygen flowed through a tiny mask covering his face. His skin was dangerously hot, and his heartbeat raced from severe heat exposure.
Valentina refused to let go of her little brother's hand.
Even as nurses cleaned the deep cut across her palm and placed a cold compress against her swollen cheek, she kept whispering the same words.
"It's okay, Santi..."
"I'm right here."
Alejandro sat across from them in stunned silence.
He couldn't stop staring at his daughter.
How had he missed it?
The bruises hidden beneath long sleeves.
The dark circles under her eyes.
The way she flinched whenever an adult raised their voice.
Every sign had been there.
He simply hadn't seen them.
Or perhaps...
He had been too busy building an empire to notice his own family falling apart.
Back at the Mendoza estate...
Paulina stood calmly in front of the living-room mirror.
She touched up her lipstick.
Adjusted her diamond earrings.
Changed into an elegant cream-colored dress.
If anyone had walked in, they would have believed she was preparing for a charity luncheon—not for questioning by police.
She smiled at her reflection.
"Children lie," she whispered to herself.
"They always do."
She rehearsed her story.
Valentina had thrown a tantrum.
She had taken both children outside to calm them down.
The kennel door had accidentally locked.
She had gone inside for the key.
By the time she returned, Alejandro had already arrived.
Simple.
Convincing.
Who would believe an eight-year-old over the wife of one of Mexico's most respected businessmen?
Certainly not the police.
Certainly not the media.
Certainly not Alejandro.
Or so she believed.
At the hospital...
Dr. Ricardo Salazar removed his gloves and walked toward Alejandro.
"The baby is stable."
Alejandro released the breath he'd been holding.
"But..."
The doctor's expression remained serious.
"He was minutes away from suffering severe heatstroke."
Alejandro felt his knees weaken.
"If he had stayed in that cage another thirty or forty minutes..."
The doctor stopped.
He didn't need to finish.
Alejandro understood.
His son might not have survived.
A cold wave of guilt crashed over him.
He had promised Elena, standing beside her hospital bed before she died, that he would always protect their children.
Instead...
He had left them alone with a monster.
Valentina slowly opened her eyes.
"Daddy?"
Alejandro immediately took her hand.
"I'm here."
She hesitated before asking the question that shattered him.
"Are we going home?"
He forced a smile.
"No, sweetheart."
"Not tonight."
"Is... is Paulina there?"
Her voice was barely a whisper.
Alejandro couldn't answer.
Because for the first time...
He didn't know.
Meanwhile...
Hundreds of miles away in Monterrey...
A smartphone vibrated on the desk of Miguel Torres, owner of Sentinel Secure Systems, the company responsible for maintaining the Mendoza estate's surveillance network.
SECURITY ALERT
Camera 14 Offline — Extreme Heat Detected
Miguel frowned.
Camera 14?
That couldn't be right.
The old backyard camera had been scheduled for replacement months earlier.
Out of habit, he opened the archived footage to verify whether the camera had failed.
The video began playing.
At first...
Nothing unusual.
A quiet backyard.
Blazing sunshine.
Then...
A woman appeared.
Miguel leaned closer to the screen.
She was dragging two children.
One of them was crying.
The other carried a baby.
"What...?"
He increased the volume.
The next two minutes made his blood run cold.
He watched Paulina shove the children into the rusted kennel.
He heard the little girl's desperate screams.
"Please! My brother needs water!"
He watched Paulina lock the padlock.
Smile.
And calmly walk away.
Miguel stared at the frozen image.
"No..."
He replayed it.
Again.
Then again.
Each viewing made it worse.
His company had strict privacy policies.
He wasn't supposed to watch clients' footage.
But this wasn't a privacy issue anymore.
This was evidence.
Evidence that two children had nearly died.
He immediately reached for his office phone.
Then stopped.
Who should he call?
Alejandro?
The police?
His company's legal department?
One wrong move could destroy his career.
One delay...
Could allow a criminal to erase everything.
As he struggled with the decision...
Another notification appeared.
Cloud Backup Completed Successfully.
Three encrypted copies stored automatically.
Miguel slowly exhaled.
Paulina could destroy cameras.
She could delete files inside the house.
She could even replace the entire security system.
But she could never erase what had already been uploaded.
The truth now existed in three separate secure servers.
For the first time that day...
Someone outside the Mendoza family knew exactly what had happened.
Back at the hospital...
A police officer stepped quietly into Alejandro's room.
"Mr. Mendoza?"
Alejandro stood.
"I'm Detective Isabel Navarro."
"We need to ask a few questions about your children."
Before Alejandro could answer...
His phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
He almost ignored it.
Something made him answer.
"Mr. Mendoza?"
A calm male voice spoke.
"My name is Miguel Torres."
"I maintain your home's security system."
Alejandro frowned.
"Why are you calling?"
There was a long silence.
Then came seven words that changed everything.
"Please don't go home with your wife."
Alejandro's heart stopped.
"I have a video..."
May you like
"...that you need to see."
