CHAPTER 5 — The Midnight Kidnapping Plot

Alejandro had spent his entire life believing that money could solve almost anything.
But that night, sitting beside Santiago's hospital bed, he realized there was one thing money could never buy.
Time.
Time to erase his mistakes.
Time to protect his children before they suffered.
Time to become the father they had desperately needed.
The heart monitor beeped steadily as Santiago slept peacefully under the careful watch of pediatric nurses. His tiny hand rested inside Alejandro's much larger one.
Across the room, Valentina slept curled up on a small sofa.
Even in her sleep...
She was protecting her brother.
One arm stretched toward the crib, as if she feared someone might take him away.
Alejandro quietly wiped away another tear.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered.
"You should have been worrying about homework and cartoons..."
"...not surviving your own home."
At that moment, Detective Isabel Navarro stepped into the room carrying a thick folder.
"Mr. Mendoza?"
Alejandro stood immediately.
"Did you find anything?"
She closed the door before answering.
"We interviewed every employee at your estate."
"And?"
"Most were terrified."
Alejandro frowned.
"Terrified of Paulina."
The detective placed several written statements on the table.
"Your gardener admitted he once saw your wife force Valentina to stand outside in the rain for two hours."
"The cook reported that the little girl was often denied dinner as punishment."
"The nanny you hired for Santiago resigned after only nine days."
Alejandro looked up.
"Why?"
Detective Navarro slid another document across the table.
"She told us Paulina warned her..."
"'If you ever tell Alejandro what happens in this house, no one will ever hire you again.'"
Alejandro's jaw tightened.
"Why didn't anyone come to me?"
"They tried."
The detective met his eyes.
"But every complaint somehow disappeared before reaching you."
Alejandro's blood ran cold.
Someone had been intercepting them.
Someone inside his own household.
Across the city...
Paulina sat alone inside a luxury penthouse she secretly owned under another name.
The television was muted.
Every news channel carried the same breaking story.
LOCAL MILLIONAIRE'S CHILDREN HOSPITALIZED AFTER SUSPECTED ABUSE
Her face hadn't appeared yet.
But she knew it would.
She poured herself another glass of expensive champagne.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
"You've lost control."
The deep male voice sounded irritated.
"They found the children."
Paulina remained calm.
"They still don't have enough."
"They have the security footage."
Silence.
Then...
"That changes everything."
Paulina slowly walked toward the window overlooking Guadalajara's glittering skyline.
"What do you want me to do?"
The answer came without emotion.
"Finish what you started."
Her fingers tightened around the champagne glass.
"You mean..."
"The children can testify."
"So can the father."
"We can't allow either."
The call ended.
Paulina stared into the darkness for a long time.
Then she opened a hidden drawer beneath her desk.
Inside lay a passport under another identity.
Bundles of cash.
A loaded pistol.
And a photograph.
The picture showed Alejandro laughing beside Valentina and Santiago on a beach months earlier.
Paulina smiled.
"You should have stayed at work."
Just after midnight...
A black delivery van rolled quietly into the hospital's underground parking garage.
Four people stepped out wearing medical uniforms.
They pushed an empty hospital bed toward the elevator.
To every security guard...
They looked completely ordinary.
But none of them worked there.
One of the men adjusted an earpiece.
"Room 512."
"Take the baby first."
"No unnecessary violence."
"If the father resists..."
The sentence was left unfinished.
Everyone understood.
On the fifth floor...
Valentina suddenly opened her eyes.
The hallway was silent.
She wasn't sure what had awakened her.
Then...
She heard footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Not like the nurses she had watched all evening.
These footsteps stopped outside their door.
Her heart began pounding.
The handle moved.
Very slowly.
The door opened just enough for a shadow to slip inside.
Valentina immediately recognized something strange.
Real nurses always smiled.
These people never looked at the patients.
They looked at the exits.
One woman whispered,
"Check the baby."
Another answered,
"The father is asleep."
Valentina looked toward Alejandro.
He had finally fallen asleep sitting beside Santiago's crib, exhausted after the longest day of his life.
She knew she had only seconds.
Quietly...
She slipped off the sofa.
Barefoot.
Without making a sound.
She reached the emergency call button beside Santiago's bed.
One of the fake nurses noticed her.
"The girl is awake."
Their eyes met.
Valentina saw something that made her blood freeze.
Not concern.
Not surprise.
Only cold determination.
The woman lunged toward her.
Valentina slammed her tiny hand onto the bright red emergency button with all her strength.
Instantly...
Alarms exploded throughout the pediatric ward.
Red emergency lights began flashing.
Hospital doors automatically locked.
Within seconds, doctors, nurses, and security officers rushed into the corridor from every direction.
The four fake medical workers turned and ran.
One escaped through the stairwell.
Another was tackled by hospital security.
The remaining two disappeared into the chaos.
Alejandro woke with a start.
"Valentina!"
She threw herself into his arms, shaking uncontrollably.
"They came for Santi..."
"They wanted to take him..."
Detective Isabel Navarro, who had been completing paperwork one floor below, sprinted into the room moments later.
She took one look at the captured fake nurse being handcuffed in the hallway.
Then she looked at Alejandro.
Her face turned pale.
"This wasn't revenge."
Alejandro stared at her.
"What was it?"
The detective answered in a voice barely above a whisper.
"This was a professional kidnapping."
May you like
"And someone paid a fortune to make sure your children never left this hospital alive."
