CHAPTER 3 — "THE VIDEO SHE NEVER KNEW EXISTED"

The basement exploded into chaos.

I ran blindly through the darkness, my father's desperate pounding echoing behind me.

"Catch him!" Vanessa screamed.

Flashlights cut through the black like knives.

A security guard grabbed the back of my jacket.

I twisted free, leaving the fabric in his hands, and sprinted toward the emergency exit.

The rain outside hit my face like ice.

I didn't stop.

Not until I reached the old fishing dock where my grandfather had taught me to cast a line years ago.

Only then did I pull out my phone.

The recording was still there.

Vanessa's confession.

The doctor's voice.

Every word.

I almost called the police.

Then I remembered something my father had repeated my entire life.

"Never show your cards until you know who's sitting at the table."

If someone inside the hospital had signed a false death certificate...

If the funeral director had helped...

If security guards were taking orders from Vanessa...

Who else had been bought?

Before I could decide, my phone buzzed.

Unknown Number.

One text.

LOOK UNDER YOUR FATHER'S DESK. TRUST NO ONE.

No name.

No explanation.

Only a location.

At sunrise I slipped into Hale Industries through the employee entrance.

The receptionist recognized me but looked away, pretending not to.

Almost everyone acted strangely.

Nobody mentioned my father's funeral.

Nobody offered condolences.

It felt less like a company in mourning...

...and more like people waiting for something.

My father's office was exactly as he'd left it.

Coffee cup.

Family photograph.

His favorite fountain pen.

The desk drawer was locked.

I remembered the old brass compass he always kept on display.

As a child he'd once smiled and said,

"If I ever disappear, the compass points home."

I picked it up.

The base unscrewed.

Inside was a tiny key.

My hands shook.

The locked drawer clicked open.

There wasn't cash.

There weren't company documents.

There was a hidden hard drive.

And a handwritten envelope.

FOR RYAN. ONLY IF I'M GONE.

I plugged the drive into my laptop.

The screen flickered.

My father appeared.

Alive.

Healthy.

Recorded three weeks earlier.

"If you're watching this, someone has tried to erase me."

He looked straight into the camera.

"I discovered that my board approved a secret medical project."

"They've been testing an experimental neurological drug on terminal patients."

"My wife, Vanessa, isn't just involved..."

"She owns the shell company funding it."

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Dad continued.

"If I refuse to sign ownership over to her, she'll fake my death."

"I've hidden evidence in three places."

"One copy is with me."

"The second..."

A loud knock interrupted the recording.

Dad looked toward the office door.

His expression changed instantly.

"They're here."

The screen froze.

Then went black.

At that exact second...

The office lights went out.

Someone had cut the power.

May you like

And outside the glass walls...

Dozens of footsteps slowly surrounded the room.
