CHAPTER 5 — "THE DEAD MAN WALKED INTO HIS OWN MEMORIAL"

For seventy-two hours, my father had vanished.

No calls.

No messages.

No sightings.

The news exploded across every television station.

MISSING BUSINESSMAN BELIEVED DEAD MAY STILL BE ALIVE.

Vanessa appeared on every network wearing black, pretending to be a grieving widow.

She cried beautifully.

Too beautifully.

"If Jonathan is alive," she told reporters, "I only want him home."

It was the biggest lie I'd ever heard.

Because the police had searched her mansion the night before.

Hidden beneath the basement floor, they found enough sedatives to keep a man unconscious for weeks.

Yet somehow...

Vanessa walked free.

Her attorneys blamed everything on a "rogue physician."

The doctor disappeared before he could testify.

Another witness.

Gone.

That night, Detective Marcus called me.

"We found something."

He slid a small evidence bag across the table.

Inside was my father's wedding ring.

Engraved on the inside was something I'd never noticed before.

SAFE 19. ELM STREET.

It wasn't an engraving.

It was a message.

Within an hour we arrived at an abandoned law office on Elm Street.

Hidden behind an old bookshelf was a steel safe.

The code?

My birthday.

Inside were three items.

A thick folder.

A USB drive.

And a handwritten letter addressed to me.

"Ryan,"

"If you're reading this, I failed to stop them in time."

"Everything Vanessa wanted was never my company..."

"It was Project Lazarus."

Marcus frowned.

"What is Project Lazarus?"

I opened the folder.

Photographs spilled across the table.

Hospital patients.

Corporate executives.

Government officials.

Every one of them connected to the same experimental neurological drug.

Some were listed as dead.

Yet recent surveillance photos showed them alive under new identities.

The project wasn't about curing disease.

It was about making people legally disappear.

Fake deaths.

New identities.

Hidden fortunes.

Insurance fraud.

Political blackmail.

My father's company had unknowingly funded the technology.

When he discovered the truth...

Vanessa decided he had to become one of the "dead."

Then my phone vibrated.

One message.

No number.

No name.

COME TO ST. MICHAEL'S CHAPEL. MIDNIGHT. COME ALONE IF YOU WANT YOUR FATHER BACK.

Marcus reached for his gun.

"It's a trap."

"I know."

I looked at the message again.

"But if Dad sent it..."

"I have to go."

Exactly at midnight, I entered the abandoned chapel.

Candles flickered across the cracked stone floor.

A lone figure stepped from the shadows.

Thin.

Bruised.

Bearded.

Barely able to stand.

"Dad..."

Jonathan Hale smiled weakly.

"You grew up fast."

Before I could reach him—

A sniper's bullet shattered the stained-glass window.

My father threw me to the ground.

The shot that should have killed me tore through his shoulder instead.

Outside...

Black SUVs surrounded the church.

Vanessa climbed out of the first vehicle.

Slowly...

Calmly...

Applauding.

"I've spent four days looking for you," she said.

"And you walked right into my hands."
