Chapter 6 - The Trap CollapsesEl Hacha walked slowly toward the generator, his dark eyes locked onto Tomás like a predator sizing up its prey. He held a thick leather folder in his hand.

“Don Julián,” the enforcer said, nodding respectfully toward the older engineer. “We verified the cargo in Manzanillo. Everything has been returned intact, along with the interest owed by this pathetic scoundrel.”
Tomás gaped in horror, looking back and forth between his terrifying creditor and his wife’s uncle. “Returned? Interest? What... what are you talking about?”
Julián turned to Tomás with a cold, terrifying smile.
“Did you really think an eight-hundred-thousand-dollar shipping line operates without international oversight, Tomás?” Julián asked softly. “Fourteen years ago, when I took the engineering contract in the Middle East, I didn't just build roads. I built logistics networks for multinational infrastructure consortia. The men you owed money to aren't just local street thugs. They are part of a global maritime group that relies on my firm to inspect port security across South America.”
Tomás’s mind shattered. The pieces fell together in a blinding flash of realization.
Julián hadn't just stumbled into this situation when he returned to Mexico. He had known about Tomás’s fraudulent operations for weeks. The moment Mariana had mentioned her husband’s high-flying ‘transport company’ in her letters over the past year, Julián had run quiet background checks. He had been waiting for the right moment to step in—and seeing the finger-shaped bruises on Mariana’s arm had triggered an absolute, merciless annihilation.
“You... you engineered this whole thing?” Tomás stammered, his knees shaking uncontrollably. “You controlled the debt from the start?!”
“You brought yourself to your knees through your own greed and cruelty, Tomás,” Julián replied. “I simply bought out your debt from the syndicate three days ago. Which means... you don't owe eight hundred thousand dollars to a cartel. You owe eight hundred thousand dollars to me.”
Tomás fell backward onto the muddy ground, staring up at Julián in complete disbelief. “You... you bought my debt?”
“Every single peso,” Julián said. “And unlike the syndicate, I don't want your money. I don't need your money. I have something far more legally binding in mind.”
Julián raised his hand, and two unmarked police vehicles suddenly pulled into the timber yard, their red and blue emergency lights flashing bright through the rain and fog. Federal agents stepped out, weapons drawn, accompanied by a female prosecutor holding an official arrest warrant.
“Tomás Varela,” the prosecutor announced loudly over the sound of the rain. “You are under arrest for grand financial fraud, identity theft, tax evasion, and human trafficking conspiracy related to the Manzanillo port operations.”

“No! No!” Tomás screamed, flailing in the mud as two federal officers pinned his arms behind his back, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. “Julián! Mariana! You can’t do this to me! I’m your family!”
“You were never family,” Julián said coldly as the officers dragged the screaming, sobbing man toward the police cruiser. “You were a parasite. And today, you’ve been exterminated.”
