Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the LightThree months later.

The morning sun washed over the courtyard of Doña Elvira’s home in Guadalajara, painting the terracotta tiles in warm shades of gold. The sweet smell of blooming jasmine filled the air, replacing the heavy, oppressive atmosphere that had hung over the family for years.

Mariana stood by the fountain, watching her mother tend to her rose bushes. For the first time in over two years, Mariana wore a short-sleeved yellow dress. The deep purple bruises that had once marred her skin were entirely gone, replaced by healthy, radiant life.

The legal proceedings had moved with terrifying speed. With the mountains of evidence provided by Julián and the federal authorities, Tomás had been denied bail. His trial had ended in a swift conviction: twenty-two years in a federal penitentiary for financial fraud, racketeering, and domestic violence. The apartment in Andares had been liquidated to pay off his victims, and every cent stolen from Doña Elvira’s accounts had been fully recovered and restored.

The front gate clicked open, and Uncle Julián walked into the courtyard carrying a fresh tray of sweet bread from the local bakery.

“Good morning, ladies,” Julián said with a broad, warm smile, setting the tray down on the patio table.

Mariana walked over and wrapped her arms around her uncle in a deep, tight hug. “Good morning, Uncle.”

Julián patted her back gently before pulling back to look at her face. “You look peaceful, Mariana. Truly peaceful.”

“I am,” she said softly, sitting down at the table. “I had my final court meeting with the divorce lawyers yesterday. It’s officially done. The Solís name is the only name I carry now.”

“And what about the future?” Julián asked, pouring himself a cup of coffee. “The financial firm in Zapopan called me yesterday. They said your old position as senior risk analyst is open whenever you’re ready to return.”

Mariana smiled—a genuine, confident smile that reached all the way to her eyes. “I start on Monday. But this time, I’m taking the lead on their social impact portfolio. I want to help women who are trapped in financially abusive situations get back on their feet.”

“That’s my girl,” Julián said proudly, raising his coffee cup in a toast.

For an hour, the family laughed, drank coffee, and talked about the future. The nightmare was finally over. The monster was behind bars, the money was restored, and peace had returned to their lives.

Or so they thought.

At 2:00 PM, while Mariana was organizing her old textbooks in her childhood bedroom, her personal laptop chimed with an incoming encrypted email.
