Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AT THE HACIENDATwo months later, the dust had settled across the legal battlefields of Guadalajara.

The federal trial was swift and merciless. Thanks to the exhaustive digital logs, financial paper trails, and secret video recordings compiled by Don Eusebio over two years of calculated silence, Rogelio, Claudia, and Sebastián were sentenced to lengthy prison terms for corporate fraud, asset laundering, and elder abuse. Verónica received a reduced sentence due to her cooperation plea, but her social standing, her wealth, and her freedom were utterly destroyed.

At the sprawling Carranza family hacienda on the outskirts of Zapopan, the evening air smelled of blooming jasmine and wet earth.

Javier sat on the wide stone veranda, looking out over the endless green pastures where several of the company's newest semi-trucks rolled past in the distance, their polished chrome catching the golden light of the setting sun.

Footsteps echoed softly behind him.

Don Eusebio walked out onto the veranda, moving with the aid of his cane, but standing significantly straighter than he had the day Javier broke open his bedroom door. He wore a traditional embroidered guayabera shirt and a wide-brimmed hat.

"The latest quarterly report just came in from the northern logistics hub," Don Eusebio said, handing a thick manila folder to Javier. "Efficiency is up thirty percent. The drivers union voted unanimously to approve the new pension restructuring."

Javier opened the folder, scanning the numbers with a critical eye before looking up with a slight smile. "We couldn't have done it without cutting away the dead weight, Don Eusebio."

The old man chuckled, pulling up a wooden rocking chair and sitting down beside his former son-in-law. He poured two small glasses of aged tequila from a crystal decanter on the side table, handing one to Javier.

"You know, son," Don Eusebio murmured, staring out at the horizon where the sun was dipping below the rugged peaks of the Sierra Madre. "When I suffered that heart attack two years ago, the doctors told me I had six months left. They told me my mind would turn to mush."

"You proved them wrong," Javier said, clinking his glass against the old man's.

"I didn't just prove them wrong," Don Eusebio sighed, a nostalgic smile touching the corners of his mouth. "I gave my family a mirror. I wanted to see who would love the man, and who only loved the empire. I found out the hard way... but I also found out who was truly holding the foundation together."

He turned his sharp, intelligent eyes toward Javier.

"The company bears my name, Javier. But Carranza Transportes belongs to the man who kept its heart beating when everyone else wanted it dead."
