Chapter 1 - THE INVOICE OF PARASITES

The stamped red letters across the top of page one did not stutter. They did not apologize.

NOTICE OF FULL ASSET REVOCATION, FORECLOSURE PROCEEDINGS, AND CONCURRENT CRIMINAL FILINGS

Catherine’s breath hitched in a sharp, jagged gasp. The small paring knife she had been using to score the lemon peel slipped from her fingers, clattering against the marble island before sliding down to embed its tip cleanly into the grout of the kitchen tile. It was the exact spot where my tooth had fallen three weeks ago.

Richard adjusted his glasses, his face draining of its morning ruddiness until his skin looked like unbaked dough. He reached out a thick, trembling hand to snatch the document away from his wife.

"Let me see that. It's just another one of her little tantrums. A lawyer’s letterhead costs fifty bucks online, she’s trying to—"

His voice stalled. It didn't just taper off; it died in his throat like an engine starved of fuel.

Right there, neatly itemized under bold headers, was every single cent, every utility bill, every grocery receipt, every vacation deposit, and every emergency loan he had ever forced me to siphon out of my corporate account. But it wasn't listed as help. It was categorized under Section 4: Extortion under Duress, Coerced Loans, and Systematic Financial Embezzlement.

Attached to the back of Richard’s page was a crisp, high-resolution color printout of the sworn affidavit I had filed with Mr. Harrison’s corporate legal team. In it, my boss—a man with deep ties to federal compliance oversight—had signed off on an official deposition detailing how Richard had called the corporate office threatening to frame me for corporate theft if I did not redirect my salary to a third party.

Madison dropped her phone.

The screen protection glass shattered with a dull crunch against the hardwood floor as it bounced and skidded under the dining table, still recording a distorted, looping video of the ceiling fan spinning round and round.

"What... what is this?" Madison whispered, her face going stark white under her expertly applied contour. She snatched page three from her father’s limp fingers. Her eyes raced down the column of routing numbers. "These are... these are my savings accounts. These are my crypto wallets. Why are my account numbers highlighted in red? Why does it say... Frozen by Court Order?"

Richard finally found his voice, and it was a roar that shook the decorative coffee mugs hanging by the window.

"She can’t do this!" he bellowed, slamming his fist down on the counter so hard the lemon water glass tipped over, spilling a sour puddle across the mail. "I am her father! I raised her! I fed her! That money belongs to this household! Catherine, call her! Call her right now and tell her she has five minutes to retract this garbage or I swear to God I’ll drive down to her office and drag her out by her hair!"

Catherine didn't reach for her phone. She was staring at the bottom of page four, where a secondary document bore the stamp of the Municipal Court and the signature of a judge who didn't care about family loyalty.

"Richard," Catherine whispered, her voice trembling as she pointed a manicured finger at a single paragraph near the bottom. "Look at the date. Look at the asset freeze..."

Richard leaned in, squinting. Then, slowly, the color returned to his face only to vanish again, replaced by a sickly, greenish sheen.

The freeze order wasn't just on Madison's accounts.

It was on the house.
