Chapter 8 - THE NEW ARCHITECTURE

The flight to London was smooth, quiet, and flown above the clouds where the weather never changed.

I sat in 1A, the light from my private cabin window casting a clean, pale glow across the pages of the final corporate audit report resting on my lap. My name was printed across the title page in bold, unshakeable black ink: Victoria Miller, Regional Managing Director, Apex Global (UK & European Operations).

No hyphenated surnames. No parental co-signatories. No emergency transfer requests from siblings who viewed my labor as their birthright.

The flight attendant walked down the aisle, pausing beside my seat with a warm, professional smile.

"Good afternoon, Ms. Miller. Can I get you anything before we begin our descent? Some sparkling water? A refreshment?"

I looked down at the small glass of lemon water resting on the fold-down tray table. The ice cubes clinked softly against the crystal rim, translucent and pure, without a single drop of bitterness in the mix.

I smiled, my front tooth catching the cabin light with a sharp, flawless brilliance.

"No, thank you," I said, my voice steady, clear, and entirely my own. "I'm quite finished drinking from other people's cups."

I closed the report, leaned back against the leather headrest, and watched the grey Atlantic coastline fade away beneath the wing as the plane dipped smoothly toward the horizon, banking hard toward a future that could never be foreclosed again.
