Chapter 4 - THE SHERIFF’S KNOCK

The heavy rap at the front door wasn't the polite, tentative knock of a neighbor dropping off mail. It was three sharp, concussive thuds of heavy-duty knuckles against oak—the kind of knock that announced authority, inevitability, and handcuffs.

Richard froze midway across the kitchen.

Catherine let out a tiny, high-pitched squeak, her hands flying to her hair as if straightening her strands could somehow undo a federal asset freeze.

"Open it," Madison hissed, her face pale under her smeared makeup. "Dad, tell them it's a mistake! Tell them we're respectable people!"

Richard swallowed hard, wiped his sweaty palms down the front of his stained hoodie, and marched down the hallway. He wrenched the front door open, forcing a tight, trembling facsimile of his usual authoritative scowl onto his face.

"Can I help you, Officer?" Richard barked, standing broad in the doorway to block their view of the interior. "If this is about the noise complaint from the neighbors, my wife was just—"

"Richard Miller?" the lead deputy asked, his voice flat and professional, cutting through Richard's bluster like a bandsaw.

"Yes, that's me—"

The deputy didn't answer with words. He simply held out a clipboard with a blue-backed court order clipped to the top, while his partner stepped smoothly to the left, planting a heavy boot across the threshold to prevent the door from being shut.

"You are being served with an expanded writ of attachment and immediate criminal bench warrant citation, Docket Number 889-CR," the deputy recited from memory. "Issued by Judge Eleanor Vance, Southern District Circuit Court. You are required to surrender all keys, vehicle titles, and negotiable instruments currently registered under your name or any corporate shell entities linked to Miller Holdings."

Richard’s mouth opened and closed like a fish stranded on a hot dock.

"Hold on! This is a civil dispute! You can't just—this is my home! My family lives here!"

"Not anymore, Mr. Miller," the second deputy said, stepping fully into the foyer. Behind them, a second vehicle rolled up the drive—a large, flatbed tow truck with the emblem of the county impound lot emblazoned across the door. "Property seizure order covers all primary vehicles, including the 2024 Mercedes SUV parked in the driveway. Keys, please."

"That car belongs to my daughter!" Madison shrieked, storming down the hallway in her platform sneakers. "I use that for my content creation! You can't take my car! Victoria! I know you're watching this! You're a psycho! You're destroying our lives over a stupid tooth!"

The deputy glanced at Madison, then down at the paperwork on his clipboard.

"Ms. Madison Miller? There is an additional addendum attached to your file."

May you like

Madison stopped dead in her tracks, her chest heaving. "What addendum?"

"Failure to appear for the preliminary deposition scheduled at 8:00 a.m. this morning at the county courthouse," the deputy said calmly. "A bench warrant for your immediate arrest was signed ten minutes ago."
