Chapter 1 - The Badge and the BlueprintOfficer Brenda Hayes reached for her belt, her hand hovering instinctively near her radio. The cafeteria had gone completely dead; even the humming soda machine seemed to hold its breath.

Darius Coleman didn't flinch. He didn’t raise his hands defensively, nor did he step back. Instead, he reached into his inner breast pocket with deliberate slowness, keeping his movements transparent and controlled.

"I am Darius Coleman," he said, his voice carrying an icy, level weight that seemed to drop the room's temperature by ten degrees. He pulled out a sleek, titanium card and his dark blue American passport. "And I have every right to be standing right here."

Brenda took the ID, her eyes scanning the name. Then she looked up, her gaze shifting from Darius to Amara, and finally back to the visitor badge clipped to his lapel. A subtle shift occurred in Brenda's posture. She had worked campus security for twelve years; she knew the faces of the university’s elite, and more importantly, she knew the names of the men who didn't just donate wings to the campus, but funded the entire endowment.

"Mr. Coleman," Brenda said, her tone instantly shifting from authoritative to hyper-cautious. "I... I wasn't aware you were on campus today. The trustees said—"

"The trustees are currently sitting in a boardroom upstairs, unaware that their dining supervisor is running a caste system in the cafeteria," Darius interrupted, his eyes fixed entirely on Patricia Sullivan.

Patricia scoffed, though a flicker of uncertainty finally crossed her square-shouldered frame. "Don't play games with security, sir. I don't care who you claim to be. Rules apply to everyone. People who can't afford full tuition without special assistance don't get to—"

"Assistance?" Darius stepped closer to the glass sneeze-guard, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "My daughter’s tuition, room, board, and meal plan were wired in full from a Chase private account three months before the semester started. Furthermore, my foundation signed a preliminary agreement for the Renee Coleman Biochemistry Center this morning."

The name hung in the air like a lightning strike. Renee Coleman.

Every single student, faculty member, and staffer in the room knew that name. It was plastered on the capital campaign banners hanging from the quad clock tower.

Patricia’s face drained of color. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Amara looked up, tears finally spilling over her lashes, not of weakness, but of overwhelming vindication. "Dad... please. Let's just go."

"No, Amara," Darius said softly, wrapping a strong arm around her shaking shoulders. He looked back at Brenda Hayes. "Officer, I want this woman's supervisor, the Dean of Students, and the university president brought to this cafeteria immediately. Do not ask them to come. Tell them Darius Coleman is waiting by the serving line."
