Officer Brenda Hayes reached for her belt, her hand hovering instinctively near her radio. The cafeteria had gone completely dead; even the humming soda machine seemed to hold its breath. / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - The Public ExposureDown in the cafeteria, the atmosphere had shifted from shocked silence to a low, buzzing uproar. Phones were out everywhere. TikTok livestreams were spinning up; tweets were flying across campus groups with hashtags like #WhitmoreCaste and #ColemanCafeteria.

Tyler Brooks had stepped out from the crowd, standing loyally beside Amara. "You okay?" he muttered.

"I'm fine," Amara whispered back, though her hands were still trembling.

Patricia Sullivan was no longer standing tall. Her apron strings suddenly felt too tight. She tried to retreat behind the kitchen doors, but Officer Hayes blocked her path with a firm hand on her holster.

"You stay right where you are, Ms. Sullivan," Hayes ordered.

Darius hadn't moved an inch from his spot beside his daughter. He had pulled out his phone, dialed a direct number, and placed it to his ear.

"Marcus," Darius said into the phone, his voice echoing cleanly through the quiet room. "Cancel the wire transfer for the biochemistry center. Yes, all of it. And draft a letter to the board revoking our foundation's partnership effective immediately."

At those words, Patricia let out a strangled gasp. "You can't do that! You can't punish the whole school just because—"

"Just because your bigotry cost you your career?" Darius cut her off, his eyes burning into hers. "You didn't just target my daughter, Ms. Sullivan. You’ve been doing this to students from underprivileged backgrounds for years, haven't you? Assuming who belongs and who doesn't based on the color of their skin and the brand of their clothes."

"That's a lie!" Patricia shrieked, her voice cracking. "She didn't have the right sticker on her card!"
