Chapter 4 - The Boardroom AmbushThe mahogany boardroom of Ashford Enterprises smelled of old money, polished leather, and sudden panic.

The emergency board meeting had been called at dawn under urgent protocols. The executive members sat in tense silence around the massive marble table, whispering among themselves about rumors of Ethan’s miraculous recovery and Helena’s sudden absence from the estate.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Silence descended instantly.

I walked in first, wearing a tailored charcoal-grey Prada suit that Ethan’s personal shopper had had delivered by helicopter at 5:00 AM. My hair was pulled back into a sleek chignon, and every trace of the terrified, freezing girl on the terrace was gone.

Behind me walked Ethan.

He leaned slightly on a silver-headed cane, but his stride was steady, his shoulders squared, and his eyes were fixed straight ahead with terrifying focus. Behind him stood two federal investigators and the head of corporate compliance.

Arthur Vance, the senior board director and Helena’s closest ally, stood up abruptly, his face flushed. "This is an outrage! Mr. Ashford is medically unfit to—"

"Sit down, Arthur," Ethan said. His voice was smooth, carrying the absolute authority of a man who owned every brick of the building.

Ethan pulled out the primary chair at the head of the table—the seat Helena had occupied for a year—and sat down slowly. I took the seat directly to his right, placing a thick leather-bound folder on the polished surface.

"I understand there has been some confusion regarding my health," Ethan began, resting his hands flat on the table. "And some unauthorized restructuring of company assets during my absence."

Arthur forced a tight, oily smile. "Ethan, my boy, your mother was simply acting in your best interest—"

"My mother is currently residing in the estate's subterranean holding cell, awaiting extradition for corporate embezzlement, conspiracy to commit murder, and tampering with a federal witness," Ethan interrupted smoothly.

A collective gasp echoed around the room. Pens dropped. Faces went white.

"Here is the audit," I spoke up, opening the folder and sliding copies across the mahogany toward the trembling directors. "Every unauthorized wire transfer, every forged medical document, and every shell company controlled by Helena Ashford and Arthur Vance."

Arthur lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the table. "You have no proof! This is a coup by a glorified nurse who crawled through the snow!"

Ethan didn't even flinch. He simply tapped the smart-screen embedded in the table.

Instantly, the wall-mounted projector flickered to life, broadcasting a high-definition audio recording of Arthur and Helena plotting the brake tampering in the estate’s conservatory just two days before the wedding.

“Once the new wife signs the confidentiality agreement,” Arthur’s recorded voice echoed clearly through the silent boardroom, “we administer the final dosage, cremate Ethan under medical waiver, and split the liquid assets.”

The room froze. Arthur slowly sank back into his leather chair, trembling as the federal compliance officers stepped forward, placing cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Ethan turned his head slightly, looking at me with a slow, approving smile that made my heart skip a beat. "As you can see, gentlemen," Ethan announced to the stunned board, "my wife has an extraordinary eye for detail. And effective immediately, she holds fifty-one percent of the voting shares."
