Chapter 5 - Shadows in the PenthouseThe victory at the boardroom felt hollow once the heavy oak doors closed behind us and we returned to the Ashford penthouse overlooking the glittering London skyline.

The city lights twinkled like distant diamonds, but inside the sprawling penthouse, the atmosphere was thick with unspoken tension.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the falling snow melt against the pane. The contract I had signed in desperation was still legally binding—a marriage born of debt, survival, and a shared enemy.

A gentle footstep approached behind me. A warm cashmere blanket draped over my shoulders, and Ethan’s arms wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me back against his chest.

"You're quiet," he murmured against my hair, his breath warm. "Considering we just dismantled a criminal syndicate before breakfast."

"I was just thinking about the girl on the terrace," I whispered, resting my hands over his arms. "The one who thought she was trading her life for her family's debts. She feels like a stranger."

Ethan turned me around so I was facing him. His dark eyes searched my face with intense, unblinking sincerity. "You were never a transaction to me, Clara. Even when I was locked inside my own body, unable to move a muscle, I heard every word you said to the nurses. I felt the gentle way you changed my bandages when my mother wasn't looking. You were the only real thing in a house of monsters."

My breath hitched. "Ethan..."

Before I could finish, the penthouse's emergency lights suddenly flickered and died.

The smart-home system did not chime its usual cheerful greeting. Instead, a low, distorted alarm wailed through the speakers, followed by total, suffocating darkness.

“Warning,” a robotic voice hissed, glitching heavily. “Perimeter breach on sector four. Main power offline. Secondary override engaged by... unknown user.”

Ethan’s body instantly went rigid. He pulled me behind him, his hand sliding into the inner pocket of his jacket, where he kept a heavy tactical firearm.

"Stay behind me," he whispered, his voice dangerously low. "The gates didn't lock us in, Clara. They locked someone in with us."
