Chapter 8 - A New HorizonOne year later.

The former Lomas Verdes mansion no longer bore the grand, intimidating iron gates that once kept the rest of the world out.
Instead, the estate had been completely transformed. The high walls were torn down, replaced by open wrought-iron railings surrounded by blossoming lavender gardens and bright, welcoming signs reading: The Hernández Foundation: Center for Women’s Empowerment and Financial Independence.
Inside the sprawling estate—once the site of arrogant parties and fraudulent schemes—dozens of women attended financial literacy workshops, legal counseling sessions, and career training classes. Laughter, support, and genuine hope now echoed through the halls where coldness and cruelty once reigned.
On a sunny Saturday afternoon, Renata Hernández stood on the second-floor balcony, looking down at the gardens below.
She wore a simple white linen dress, the wind gently catching her hair. The memory of that dreadful morning—the white wedding flowers, the overflowing laundry basket, the stinging blow across her face—felt like a lifetime ago.
Footsteps approached softly from behind.
Licenciado Morales stepped onto the balcony, holding a fresh cup of coffee and a thin leather folder.
“The quarterly foundation report is in, Director,” Morales said with a warm smile. “We’ve successfully helped over five hundred women escape abusive financial situations, recover stolen inheritances, and start their own independent businesses this year alone.”
Renata took the folder, flipping it open to read the glowing statistics. A genuine, radiant smile touched her lips.
“That’s the best return on investment we could possibly ask for, Morales,” Renata replied softly.
“Indeed it is,” Morales agreed, pausing for a moment before continuing. “By the way, I received a final piece of paperwork from the prison system this morning. Mateo’s final appeal was formally rejected by the high court this week. His sentence is fully locked in.”
Renata didn't look up from the report. She simply closed the folder and rested it against the stone railing of the balcony.
“He’s history, Morales. Let’s keep our eyes on the future.”
“Always, Director,” Morales nodded respectfully, turning to leave her to her thoughts.
As Morales stepped back inside, Renata looked out toward the horizon of Mexico City. The vast metropolis stretched endlessly beneath the golden afternoon sun—a city full of hidden secrets, fragile illusions, and unexpected power.
