Chapter 4 - THE TRAP AT THE CHARITY BALLThe Annual Cole Foundation Gala was held at the grand glass pavilion overlooking Central Park.

Over three hundred high-society guests, doctors, and news reporters filled the room. Evelyn Cole and Victoria Vance stood near the center stage, wearing lavish designer gowns, holding champagne glasses as they spoke to the press.
"Yes, my son Harrison has struggled since his wife's passing," Evelyn told a reporter smoothly. "But Victoria has been our absolute rock, guiding poor little Grace through her psychological trauma."
Suddenly, the grand glass doors swept open.
Harrison Cole walked into the ballroom, looking imposing in a bespoke tuxedo. Beside him, walking hand-in-hand, was Claire.
She wore a breathtaking crimson silk gown, her hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders, a diamond pendant resting against her collarbone. She looked every bit like a queen.
Sustained gasps echoed through the room.
Evelyn’s face turned bright red with embarrassment. Victoria’s champagne glass trembled in her grip.
"What is that girl doing here?!" Victoria hissed under her breath.
Harrison led Claire up to the main stage, stepping up to the microphone. The room went completely silent.
"Good evening, everyone," Harrison spoke, his voice echoing clearly through the speaker system. "Tonight, we are here to celebrate healing. For ten months, my daughter Grace lived in a dark tower of silence. Many experts claimed she was beyond reach."
Harrison reached down, offering his hand toward the side stage.
Eight-year-old Grace walked out onto the stage, wearing a pretty white dress. She wasn't hiding. She wasn't crying. She walked tall, holding a small microphone in her small hands.
The crowd gasped in shock!
"Tonight," Grace said, her sweet, clear voice filling the entire ballroom, "I want to introduce the woman who saved me. Miss Claire."
Applause erupted across the room!
Evelyn stepped forward angrily toward the stage. "Harrison! This is an outrage! You are putting an uneducated waitress on a pedestal!"
Grace looked down at her grandmother, then turned her eyes directly toward Victoria Vance.

"Victoria," Grace spoke into the microphone, her voice steady and fearless. "Why did you tell me my daddy would send me to Europe if I talked?"
The entire ballroom went deathly quiet.
