Chapter 5 - Ghosts from the Past

The heavy pounding on the downstairs door reverberated through the newly renovated hallways. Mara froze, her napkin slipping from her trembling fingers.
"Open up! I know you're in there, Mara!" a harsh, gravelly voice screamed from the foyer. "Don't play games with me! I saw the news! You think you can hide behind your rich old sugar daddy while your own family rots?!"
Elias’s eyebrows arched slightly. He looked at Richard Sterling, who immediately signaled to the security guards stationed in the hall.
"Wait," Mara whispered, holding up a hand to stop them. Her face was deathly pale. "Please... don't hurt him. That's... that's my uncle, Julian."
The door to the apartment, now fitted with a heavy steel frame, creaked open as security gently unlocked it from the outside. Stumbling into the hallway was a middle-aged man with chaotic hair, expensive clothes that looked rumpled from travel, and eyes wild with desperation and greed. It was Julian Bell, Mara’s estranged uncle—the man who had stolen her father’s business, drained her mother’s medical savings, and left their family to sink into absolute poverty.
Julian pushed past a security guard, stopping dead in his tracks when he saw the luxurious interior of the apartment, the high-powered lawyers, and billionaire Elias Vance sitting calmly at the table. Julian’s expression instantly shifted from aggressive fury to a sickening, oily smile.
"Mara! My sweet niece!" Julian cooed, spreading his arms wide as if he were walking into a family reunion. "I saw the broadcast! The whole city is talking about you! I knew you had a good head on your shoulders. I came as fast as I could to help you manage your new empire."
Mara stood up, her legs shaking with pure adrenaline. "What are you doing here, Julian? You haven't spoken to us in six years. Not since you took everything we had."
"Business disputes, my dear! Misunderstandings!" Julian laughed dismissively, waving a hand in the air. He stepped closer, eyeing Elias with calculated reverence. "Mr. Vance, a pleasure and an honor. I am Julian Bell, Mara’s legal guardian and financial advisor. I must apologize for her dramatic tone—family matters, you know how it is. Naturally, as her primary blood relative, I will be handling the legal transfer of her new properties and assets."
Elias did not stand up. He simply crossed his legs, resting his chin on his knuckles, and stared at Julian with eyes as cold as arctic ice.
"Financial advisor?" Elias asked softly. "Interesting. According to the preliminary background check Mr. Sterling just pulled up on my tablet, your financial advising career consists of three bankruptcy filings, two counts of corporate embezzlement, and a civil lawsuit for defrauding your own brother's medical estate."
Julian’s oily smile faltered. Beads of sweat broke out across his forehead. "Th-That's just malicious gossip! Competitors trying to ruin my reputation! Mr. Vance, don't listen to her—she's just a bitter girl who doesn't understand the complex world of high finance."
"She understands human decency," Elias replied, his voice rising just enough to fill the entire room with crushing authority. "And unlike you, she earned everything she has today through sacrifice and selflessness. You, on the other hand, crawled out from the woodwork the exact second you realized there was money to be stolen."
Julian’s face twisted into a mask of ugly desperation. He lunged forward toward the table, his voice cracking. "She’s my niece! By law, I have rights! I demand a stake in this building! I demand—"
Before Julian could finish his sentence, Richard Sterling stepped into his path, holding out a single sheet of paper.
"Mr. Bell, you are currently trespassing on private property owned by Vance Global Holdings," Sterling said calmly. "Furthermore, federal investigators have just flagged your corporate accounts for tax evasion. The United States Marshals are waiting downstairs in the lobby right now to escort you to a federal holding cell. Would you like to walk down voluntarily, or should we have security carry you?"
Julian stared at the paper, his jaw working silently. He looked back at Mara, his eyes pleading for mercy, but she simply turned her face away, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

As two security guards grabbed Julian by the arms and dragged him backward out the door, screaming curses into the hallway, silence fell over the apartment once more.
Elias stood up, walked over to Mara, and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "You handled that with incredible grace," he said quietly. "But your trials are not quite over yet. There is one more person you need to face today."
