Chapter 6 - The Hospital Revelation

The sleek black town car sliced through the afternoon traffic, gliding smoothly toward St. Jude’s Medical Center. Mara sat in the back seat next to Elias, her hands nervously twisting the hem of her jacket. The events of the morning still felt like a surreal fever dream—the eviction, the billionaire, the takeover, and her uncle’s sudden arrest. But reality came rushing back the moment the car pulled up to the hospital entrance.

"Why are we here?" Mara asked, her voice cracking slightly as she looked at Elias. "My mother’s treatment isn't scheduled until Tuesday."

"Plans changed," Elias said gently, opening the car door for her. "Come with me."

They walked through the pristine, white-tiled corridors of the hospital's private wing. Nurses and doctors nodded respectfully as Elias passed, though many cast curious, whispering glances at Mara. They stopped outside VIP Suite 402.

Mara frowned. "This is the executive floor. How did we get up here? Normal patients aren't allowed in these rooms unless—"

"Unless their care is being personally underwritten by the hospital's primary benefactor," Elias interrupted, pushing the door open.

Mara stepped inside, and her breath caught in her throat. Her mother, Clara Bell, was sitting up in bed. She looked rested, her skin bearing a healthy color Mara hadn't seen in months, and she was laughing softly while talking to a young man who sat in a chair beside her.

"Liam?!" Mara gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "What are you doing here? You should be at school!"

Liam jumped up from his chair, a massive, triumphant grin splitting his face. He held up a thick envelope bearing the official embossed seal of the university’s board of trustees.

"Mara! You won't believe it!" Liam shouted, rushing over to hug her tightly. "This morning, out of nowhere, the dean of admissions called me personally! They didn't just accept my application—they gave me a full, four-year presidential scholarship, a housing stipend, and a dedicated research grant! And look at Mom—her doctors said her entire medical debt has been cleared, and she’s been upgraded to the experimental treatment program! We're saved, Mara! We're actually saved!"

Mara buried her face in her brother’s shoulder, tears soaking his shirt. She looked over Liam’s shoulder toward the doorway, where Elias stood quietly with his hands in his pockets, watching them with a soft, melancholic smile.

Clara Bell adjusted her glasses, looking past her son at the distinguished older man standing by the door. Her sharp, intelligent eyes—the exact same gray eyes Elias had—studied him closely.

"Elias?" Clara whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

Mara pulled away from her brother, blinking in confusion. "Mom? Do you... do you know him?"

Elias stepped slowly into the room, taking off his woolen coat and tossing it over a chair. He looked at Clara, and for the first time, Mara noticed a profound vulnerability in the billionaire’s posture.

"It's been a long time, Clara," Elias said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "Thirty years, to be exact."

Clara smiled, a bittersweet, tearful smile. "You haven't changed your eyes, Elias. Even with all those billions, you still look like the stubborn boy from the East Side who thought he could conquer the world alone."

Mara looked back and forth between her mother and the billionaire, her brain struggling to connect the dots. "Mom... what is going on? How do you know Mr. Vance?"

Clara reached out, patting the edge of her hospital bed. "Come sit down, Mara. It's time you knew the truth about our family—and why Elias Vance ended up freezing on a sidewalk right outside your apartment last night."
