CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET INSIDE THE PENDANT

The jewelry store became deathly silent.

Emily instinctively took a step backward.

Fear spread across her face.

"How do you know my name?"

Several customers reached for their phones.

One elderly woman whispered,

"Call security..."

Michael slowly raised both hands.

"I'm not trying to hurt you."

His voice shook.

"I'm trying to understand something."

Emily hugged her stomach protectively.

"You've never met me."

"No."

"You've never seen Daniel."

Michael swallowed.

"I wish that were true."

Those words made every person inside the boutique stop breathing.

Michael carefully placed the necklace onto a velvet cloth.

Then he pulled the folded note from inside the pendant and looked at it once more.

His hands were visibly trembling.

"I've been looking for this message for six months."

Emily stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Michael took a deep breath.

"My real name isn't Michael."

He reached into his wallet and slowly placed an old police identification card on the counter.

The customers leaned forward.

The card showed the photograph of the young salesman.

Under the picture...

Former Detective Michael Hayes.

Emily's knees nearly gave out.

"No..."

Michael nodded.

"I was on that operation."

Her eyes instantly filled with tears.

"You knew Daniel?"

Michael closed his eyes.

"He saved my life."

The room became so quiet that the ticking of the wall clock echoed through the boutique.

"I was trapped inside the warehouse after the explosion."

"My leg was crushed."

"I couldn't move."

"The criminals were coming back."

"I begged Daniel to leave me."

"He refused."

Emily covered her mouth.

Michael continued.

"He carried me out while bullets were flying everywhere."

"He pushed me into the rescue vehicle..."

"...then went back inside."

Emily already knew what came next.

"He never came out."

Michael lowered his head.

"I've spent every day wondering why."

His voice cracked.

"Until now."

He carefully unfolded the tiny note completely.

"This wasn't written for you."

Emily frowned.

"What?"

Michael handed her the paper.

Written in Daniel's unmistakable handwriting were the words:

If you're reading this, then Michael survived. That means I made the right choice. Please don't let my family fight this battle alone. They would never ask you for help—but I'm asking now.

Emily's entire body froze.

She had worn that necklace every day.

She had never known the note was hidden there.

Tears rolled uncontrollably down her cheeks.

Michael wiped his own eyes.

"I searched everywhere after the funeral."

"I wanted to find you."

"But your address had changed."

"The police couldn't release your information."

"So I waited."

"And today..."

He looked at the necklace.

"...you walked into my store."

Emily whispered,

"I wasn't looking for a miracle."

Michael gave a sad smile.

"No."

"You were looking for hope."

Just then...

The owner of the jewelry store stepped out of his office after hearing the commotion.

He looked at the necklace.

Looked at the crying customers.

Then asked only one question.

"Michael..."

"...what's happening here?"

Michael slowly turned toward him.

His answer stunned everyone.

"This necklace..."

"...isn't for sale."

"And before this day is over..."

May you like

"...every promise made to Detective Daniel Carter's family will finally be kept."
