CHAPTER 4 — THE HERO THEY TRIED TO ERASE

Emily felt the world spinning around her.

"What... did you just say?"

Michael slowly lowered the phone.

His face had turned completely pale.

"The Internal Affairs Division reopened Daniel's case this morning."

Emily's hands began to shake.

"They found the tactical body camera that disappeared after the operation."

Richard frowned.

"I thought it was destroyed."

"So did everyone."

Michael swallowed hard.

"It wasn't destroyed."

"It was hidden."

A chill swept through the jewelry store.

The detective on the phone continued speaking.

"The recording has already been recovered."

"What does it show?" Michael asked.

For several long seconds...

There was only silence.

Then came the answer.

"It shows one of Daniel's commanding officers giving the wrong coordinates on purpose."

Emily gasped.

"No..."

Michael's grip tightened around the phone.

"And that's not all."

"The video clearly shows Daniel discovering the betrayal."

"He realized the entire team had been led into an ambush."

Richard whispered,

"My God..."

The detective continued.

"Daniel managed to get most of the officers out."

"But before he could escape..."

"Someone locked the warehouse doors from the outside."

Emily burst into tears.

"They trapped him..."

Michael closed his eyes.

"Who?"

The answer made his blood run cold.

"The commanding officer who supervised the mission."

Everyone inside the jewelry store stood frozen.

One customer whispered,

"Why would a police commander do that?"

The detective replied,

"We believe Daniel uncovered a long-running corruption network involving drug money, stolen evidence, and fake arrests."

"He was about to expose everyone."

"They silenced him."

Emily could barely breathe.

For six months she had believed her husband died a hero in a tragic accident.

Now she learned something even more horrifying.

He hadn't been unlucky.

He had been murdered.

Michael's voice grew cold.

"So the hero wasn't abandoned..."

"He was executed."

At that exact moment, the television mounted on the wall suddenly switched to a breaking news broadcast.

The headline flashed across the screen:

BREAKING NEWS

Police Corruption Investigation Reopened. Decorated Officer Daniel Carter Officially Cleared as New Evidence Emerges.

Every customer turned toward the screen.

The reporter continued,

"Authorities have confirmed that several senior officials are now under investigation after newly recovered evidence suggested Detective Daniel Carter attempted to expose corruption before his death. Arrest warrants are expected within hours."

Emily covered her mouth.

For the first time in six months...

The entire city was finally learning the truth.

Michael looked at her with determination.

"They took your husband away."

"They stole his honor."

"They left you and your child with nothing."

He gently placed the necklace back around her neck.

"But they're about to lose everything."

Outside the jewelry store...

Black police SUVs suddenly screeched to a stop.

Several detectives stepped out.

One of them looked through the glass door.

Then directly at Emily.

"We're here because Detective Daniel Carter left something else behind..."

May you like

"...a final piece of evidence that only his wife can unlock."

To be continued...
