Chapter 12 - The Phoenix ProtocolThe world shattered around Ethan.

"No..." Ethan stumbled backward, gripping his rifle so tightly his knuckles turned white. "You died... I buried you..."
"You buried an empty box, Ethan," Clara said calmly, stepping away from the console as the glass cage holding Ava lowered inches above the fiery geothermal pit. "I didn't die in that cabin fire. I staged it. I built this project. Hayes was just my field manager."
Ava screamed through the soundproof glass of her cage: "DAD! DON'T LISTEN TO HER! SHE'S NOT MY MOTHER ANYMORE!"
"Shut her down," Clara ordered cold-bloodedly to a tactical engineer standing beside her.
The engineer slammed a lever, and electric currents surged through the wires connected to Ava’s head. The girl shrieked in agony as data streamed across Clara’s monitors—the neural map of the bond between human and animal brainwaves, the ultimate key to controlling the Apex Directive's bio-engineered beasts.
"Why, Clara?" Ethan roared, his tears freezing on his cheeks. "We had a life! We had a daughter!"
"We had a fragile, pathetic existence in a wooden hut!" Clara spat back, her eyes burning with fanatical madness. "With this research, we transcend humanity! Ava is the only subject whose brain can interface with the Alpha strain without dying! She is the crown jewel of the future!"
Maya let out a furious, deafening howl that echoed through the massive steel cavern. She lunged forward, aiming straight for Clara’s throat!
"Terminator squad, fire!" Clara commanded.
Four heavily armed cyborg hounds—monstrosities made of steel, hydraulic limbs, and wolf DNA—leaped from the shadows, slamming Maya to the reinforced floor. Maya fought valiantly, tearing through wires and steel plates, but the mechanical beasts overwhelmed her, pinning her down as red laser sights targeted her head.
Clara raised a remote control device. "It's time to end this family tragedy, Ethan. Once I erase your brainwaves, Ava will have no memories left to hold her back."
She pressed the red button on the remote.
A heavy mechanical winch began lowering Ava's glass cage directly into the bubbling, red-hot lava below!
"NO!" Ethan screamed.
In a final, desperate act of sheer madness, Ethan didn't shoot Clara. He turned his rifle toward the heavy structural support beam holding the geothermal cooling tanks above their heads and emptied his entire magazine into the main pressure valve.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Super-cooled liquid nitrogen exploded out of the shattered pipes, raining down upon the chamber in a roaring, freezing blizzard!
The extreme temperature shock hit the red-hot iron catwalks and the mechanical hounds. The sudden change from boiling heat to sub-zero cold caused the metal floor to instantly crack, shatter, and disintegrate!

The cyborg hounds froze and shattered into thousands of icy fragments. Clara lost her footing as the main control console exploded in a shower of blue sparks!
The cable holding Ava's cage snapped!
"AVA!" Ethan sprinted across the crumbling, freezing catwalk, launching his body into the open air as the glass cage plummeted toward the molten abyss below.
He caught the steel chain of the cage with one hand, his fingers tearing and bleeding as the heavy iron links bit into his flesh. With his other hand, he reached through the shattered window of the cage, pulling Ava out just as the glass shell plunged into the lava, exploding into a towering plume of fire!
Ethan pulled Ava onto a narrow rock ledge on the cavern wall.
Above them, the entire facility was caving in. The thermal shock had triggered a massive volcanic eruption beneath the mountain!
Clara stood on the collapsing central platform, her armor shattered, surrounded by rising flames. She looked at Ethan and Ava, her face twisted in a mixture of horror and realization as the ceiling began to rain heavy concrete boulders down upon her.
"Ethan... save me!" Clara screamed, extending her hand toward her husband.
Ethan looked at the woman he had loved, the monster she had become, and the daughter trembling in his arms.
"You died three years ago, Clara," Ethan said softly.
A massive concrete support column collapsed, crushing the central platform and sending Clara and the Apex Directive's secrets down into the fiery depths of the mountain forever.
"Dad! The mountain is collapsing!" Ava cried out.
Through the blinding smoke and falling debris came Maya. She was bleeding, her fur scorched, but she stood at the mouth of an ancient, natural lava tube that led out toward the exterior of the mountain.
"GO! RUN!" Ethan carried Ava on his back as they followed the great she-wolf through the dark, crumbling tunnel, the mountain roaring and exploding behind them with catastrophic force.
THE UNEXPECTED ENDINGThey burst out of the side of Mount Sentinel just as the entire summit collapsed inward, swallowing the Iron Hive in a massive cloud of ash, smoke, and fire.
The Apex Directive was gone. The nightmare was finally over.
Three weeks later, on a quiet coastal shoreline three thousand miles away from Blackwood Lake, the sun was setting over the vast, endless ocean.
Ethan sat on the warm sand, watching Ava run along the water's edge. Running alongside her were the four young wolf pups, leaping over the waves, barking joyfully in the salty breeze.
Maya lay on the grass nearby, resting her head on her paws, watching her family with peaceful eyes.
Ethan took a deep breath of the clear ocean air. For the first time in four agonizing years, the ice in his heart had completely melted. They had lost everything, but they had won their freedom.
Ava ran up to her father, sitting beside him on the sand, holding a small wooden box she had found washed up on the shore.
"Dad?" she asked softly. "Do you think there are other labs out there? Other people like me?"
Ethan looked out at the golden horizon, wrapping his arm around his daughter's shoulders.
"It doesn't matter if there are, sweetheart," Ethan said firmly. "Because no matter where they are, or who they send... they will never break our pack."
Suddenly, Maya raised her head, staring intently at the deep ocean water.
Far out on the horizon, beneath the quiet surface of the sea, a tiny, glowing green light flickered from a deep-sea signal buoy... transmitting a single, encoded pulse directly to the smartwatch on Ava's wrist:
PROJECT CERBERUS PHASE 2: INITIALIZED.
Ava looked down at her watch. She didn't panic. She didn't cry.
May you like
She looked back at her father, then at Maya, a cold, confident smile touching her lips. She reached down, unclipped her watch, and tossed it deep into the crashing waves of the ocean below.
"Let them try," Ava whispered to the wind.
