Chapter 9 - The Whispering SnowThe spring warmth that had embraced the valley was a lie.

Just three days after Ava revealed the truth about Maya, an unseasonal, brutal blizzard rolled down from the peaks, smothering the mountain in a blanket of blue, razor-sharp frost. The local elders called it the Ghost Moon Storm—a weather anomaly so severe it froze the sap inside the pine trees, causing them to explode like gunshots in the dead of night.
Inside the new cabin, Ethan stood by the window, watching the swirling vortex of white outside. His heart hammered against his ribs. Something was wrong. The four wolf pups were cowering under the heavy oak table, letting out low, frightened whines.
"Dad?" Ava came down the stairs, wrapping a heavy wool blanket around her shoulders. "They're back, aren't they?"
"Stay in the cellar, Ava," Ethan said, his voice dropping into the icy register he used when danger was near. He racked the bolt of his rifle. "Now."
Before she could move, a sudden, blinding flash of white illuminated the darkness outside. It wasn't lightning. It was a high-intensity magnesium flare, burning at three thousand degrees, dropped from an unseen aircraft directly above their cabin.
The front door didn't burst open; it dissolved in an explosion of wood and thermal heat.

Ethan threw himself over Ava, shielding her body as splinters and burning embers rained down upon them. Through the thick, black smoke, four figures stepped into the cabin. They wore advanced, white-camouflaged exoskeleton armor, their faces hidden behind dark, polarized visors.
Unlike Hayes’s crude mercenaries, these men moved with surgical, terrifying precision.
"Subject 7 (Ava Vance) located," a mechanized voice synthesis droned through a tactical radio. "Target Ranger Ethan Vance... authorize lethal force."
Ethan fired three rounds from his rifle, but the bullets flattened harmlessly against the heavy armor plating of the lead operative. The soldier didn't even flinch. He raised a heavy, pneumatic shock-baton and slammed it into Ethan’s chest.
The impact sent Ethan flying back into the stone fireplace, snapping two of his ribs. His vision blurred, swimming in crimson and pain. He watched through a haze of agony as the operatives pinned Ava to the floor, injecting a glowing blue sedative directly into her neck.
"DAD! NO! DAD!" Ava screamed, her voice fading fast as her eyes rolled back into her head.
"Ava..." Ethan choked out, coughing up blood, unable to stand as his body went into shock.

The lead operative hoisted the unconscious girl onto his shoulder. He turned back to Ethan, drawing a heavy suppressed sidearm. "Facility 09 was just a regional branch, Ranger. You killed a puppet. Welcome to The Apex Directive."
He pulled the trigger.
