Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

Panic erupted like a delayed explosive charge.

Cousins stood up simultaneously, shouting over one another, demanding to know why their personal accounts were frozen. Uncle Richard, who had spent the last hour trying to look invisible at the far end of the table, bolted for the exit doors, only to find two federal agents blocking the threshold with quiet, immovable authority.

“Sit down, Richard,” one of the agents murmured, resting a hand casually on his belt. “Nobody is leaving until the paperwork is finalized.”

Eleanor collapsed back into her chair, her face completely drained of color. The ironclad matriarch, who had ruled her family through intimidation, snobbery, and emotional manipulation, looked suddenly ancient and withered. She turned her tear-filled, desperate eyes toward her son.

“Nathan… say something,” she pleaded, her voice cracking. “Tell them you won’t let them destroy everything your father built. Tell your wife… tell Claire…”

Nathan slowly lowered his hands from his face. When he looked up, his expression was completely devoid of life. He looked at his mother, then across the table at the empty chair where Claire should have been sitting, had she not been wise enough to stay away.

“My wife?” Nathan laughed bitterly, a harsh, humorless sound. “Mother, you spent three years treating my wife like an inferior servant. You mocked her background, you undermined her parenting, and yesterday, you slapped a literal property tag on our six-week-old daughter as if she were a piece of antique silverware.”

He stood up, leaning his palms against the table and looking directly into his father’s horrified eyes.

“And you sat there and laughed, Dad. You both thought you were untouchable. Well, you aren’t.”

Nathan turned to the legal specialist. “Hand me the pen.”

“Nathan, no!” Eleanor screamed, lunging across the table, but her husband caught her arm and pulled her back down with a grim, defeated expression.

Nathan didn't hesitate. He took the Montblanc pen offered by the lawyer and signed his name at the bottom of the divorce petition, the custody waiver, and the asset transfer agreement with steady, ruthless strokes.

“It’s over,” Nathan whispered, dropping the pen back onto the table. “I’m done.”
