Chapter 5 - The General’s Final Word

The ink on the documents was barely dry when General Donovan stood up to his full height. He buttoned his suit jacket, his eyes sweeping across the ruined room, taking in the crying relatives, the broken matriarch, and the thoroughly defeated patriarch.
“You made a critical miscalculation, Harrison,” the General said quietly, leaning down slightly to rest his knuckles on the table. “You assumed that because someone does not boast about their power, they do not possess it. You assumed that because my daughter chose to protect her operational secrecy, she was defenseless.”
Harrison glared up at him, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. “You destroyed a multi-million-dollar legacy over a family squabble, Michael. Are you proud of yourself?”
“I didn't destroy anything,” General Donovan replied coldly. “You built your legacy on rot, theft, and arrogance. We simply applied a little sunlight. And as for the silver rattle…”
The General reached into his coat pocket, withdrew the custom silver toy Eleanor had brandished the day before, and dropped it onto the center of the mahogany table with a sharp clink. The engraved words—PROPERTY OF THE WHITMORE HOUSEHOLD—shone under the crystal chandelier.
“Keep it,” the General added. “Melt it down, sell it off, or put it in a museum as a monument to how arrogance destroys empires in less than twenty-four hours.”

He turned on his heel, signaling the legal specialist and the federal liaison to follow.
As they walked out of the grand dining hall, the heavy oak doors swung shut behind them, sealing the fate of the Whitmore dynasty forever.
