Chapter 4 - THE COUNTER-ATTACKThe apartment was suffocatingly quiet.

Chloe sat on the couch, staring blankly at her hands, the blood on her lace dress looking like dark, ominous stains under the harsh living room lights. The illusion of her fairy-tale wedding, her handsome lawyer husband, and her respectable new family had been systematically disassembled piece by piece in less than twelve hours.

"He's lying," Robert said, pacing the length of the room like a caged panther. "Arthur is a strategist, not a deity. If the jet has crossed international airspace, it still has to land."

"Where?" I asked, wiping my eyes. "The Caymans?"

"No." Robert stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes narrowing as a realization hit him. "The Cayman airspace requires a direct handoff from Florida air traffic control. But twenty minutes ago, I rerouted the transponder signals for all private departures out of Palm Beach using my firm's emergency override credentials."

The lead police officer stepped forward, his eyes widening. "Are you saying..."

"I'm saying Camille isn't flying to the Caymans," Robert said, pulling a secondary tablet from his briefcase. "She’s flying to a private airstrip in the Bahamas owned by a shell company registered under—wait. Look at this."

He spun the tablet toward us.

The flight path hadn't gone south toward the Caribbean. It had looped back north, hugging the coastline, and touched down thirty minutes ago at a private executive terminal in Fort Lauderdale.

"Why would they circle back?" Chloe asked quietly.

"Because," a new voice echoed from the doorway, "they didn't want the money in the Caymans. They wanted it in the hands of the person who actually funded the law firm investigating Lewis’s debts."

We all whipped around.

Standing in the entryway, holding a briefcase and flanked by two armed federal agents, was a tall, silver-haired woman in a tailored navy pantsuit.

Detective Marcus of the Federal Financial Crimes Task Force. And behind her stood a man I hadn't seen in a decade.

Marcus Vance. My father’s former chief legal counsel.

"Marcus?" I breathed. "What are you doing here?"

Marcus looked at Robert, then down at Chloe, his expression grim. "I’m here to arrest Arthur Sterling’s co-conspirators. And to inform you that Lewis Dudley was never working for your father."

Robert’s jaw tightened. "Explain."

"Lewis was working for the receiver appointed by the federal court to liquidate Arthur’s assets," Marcus said, stepping into the room and placing his briefcase on the table. "Arthur didn't fake his death to escape taxes, Sarah. He faked it because he was already bankrupt. The thirty-two million dollar trust? It doesn't exist anymore. It was wiped out three years ago in a Ponzi scheme run by Lewis’s own father, Richard Dudley."

The room spun.

I looked at Chloe, whose face had gone completely bloodless.

"My... my trust was gone?" Chloe whispered.

"Completely," Marcus nodded gently. "Lewis found out about the deficit six months ago. To cover his family's tracks, they needed to manufacture a massive financial influx—which meant forcing you to sign over your unencumbered Miami condo, and then framing you for a drug overdose to seize whatever insurance payouts they could trigger."

Robert stared at Marcus, his mind processing the chess move with terrifying clarity. "Arthur wasn't calling from the Maybach... he was calling from a recording device routed through an AI voice-synthesizer."

"Precisely," Marcus said. "Arthur Sterling died of a massive stroke in a private hospital in Zurich two years ago. I buried him myself. The man on the phone was using his voice model to scare you into handing over control."
