Chapter 2 - THE UNRAVELING WEBWithin twenty minutes, the atmosphere in the Harrington estate shifted from a private family disaster to a controlled crisis.

Robin had ordered Tabitha to sit on the edge of the velvet sofa in the formal drawing room while he stood guard near the double doors. I had changed out of the ruined secondhand uniform into a tailored silk blouse and trousers, my hair swept back into its usual immaculate chignon. I sat across from Tabitha behind the mahogany writing desk, resting my hands neatly on the surface.

The heavy silence was broken only by the vibration of my smartphone on the desk.

"Teresa," I answered, putting the call on speakerphone so everyone in the room could hear.

"Mrs. Harrington," the house manager’s voice came through clearly. "We have finished reviewing the security feeds from the service entrance and the central corridors, just as you requested. The audio and video files have been successfully uploaded to the private family server."

"Thank you, Teresa. Have you contacted Mr. Vance?"

"Our corporate attorney is currently reviewing the files. He says he will be here within the hour."

Tabitha’s head snapped up, her face draining of all color. "An attorney? Are you insane? You're calling a lawyer over a domestic dispute? Robin, tell your mother to stop this madness!"

Robin didn't even look at her. He kept his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on the floor. "Shut up, Tabitha. Just keep your mouth shut."

"You can't do this!" she cried, jumping to her feet. She took two steps toward the desk, her voice rising in panic. "If word gets out about this—if the media gets a hold of some fabricated story—it will destroy my reputation! Do you know who my family is? My father sits on the city council!"

"Your father's political career is the least of your concerns right now, my dear," I said softly, leaning back in my chair. "Let's talk about your family, Tabitha. Or more specifically, let's talk about the background check you submitted when you and Robin first announced your engagement."

Tabitha stopped dead in her tracks. Her breath hitched.

"What... what are you talking about?" she stammered, her eyes darting nervously toward Robin.

"When a Harrington takes a spouse, our legal team conducts a thorough vetting process," I explained, picking up a thick manila folder from the desk and flipping it open. "Your file presented a very clean picture. A graduate of a prestigious university, an heiress to a modest real estate fortune in the neighboring district, and a woman devoted to charitable works. A pristine, beautiful glass doll."

I looked up, meeting her terrified gaze.

"So imagine my curiosity when Teresa and the rest of the domestic staff came to me three weeks ago with a very different picture. They told me about a woman who snaps her fingers at servants like they are stray dogs. A woman who throws violent tantrums behind closed doors when things don't go her way. And, most fascinating of all, a woman who has a history of financial distress that your pristine resume conveniently omitted."

Tabitha’s hands began to shake violently. She wrapped her arms around herself, glaring at me with pure venom. "You spied on me. You hired private investigators to dig into my past because you never wanted me to be with Robin!"

"I didn't need a private investigator, Tabitha," I replied smoothly. "You provided all the evidence yourself today. Every single cruel, arrogant word that left your mouth was captured in crystal-clear high definition by the recorder in my pocket."

I reached down, unclipped the small device, and placed it neatly in the center of the mahogany desk.

"Would you like to listen to it now?" I asked, my voice polite, almost conversational. "Or would you prefer to wait until Mr. Vance arrives so we can discuss the annulment of your engagement contract?"

"Annulment?" Tabitha shrieked, the word tearing out of her throat like a physical wound. "We aren't even married yet! There is no marriage to annul!"

"Oh, but there is a legal contract, isn't there?" I countered, raising an eyebrow. "Clause 14 of the prenuptial agreement that you pushed Robin to sign just last week. The one stipulating that any breach of moral conduct or material misrepresentation of character prior to the ceremony results in a complete forfeiture of any claim to the Harrington estate or trust funds."

Robin’s head snapped up. He stared at Tabitha, his eyes wide with a sudden, dawning realization. "You had me sign a pre-nup clause about moral conduct? You were the one who insisted on it!"

Tabitha’s face twisted into a mask of pure panic. She realized she had walked directly into a trap of her own engineering. She had inserted that clause assuming she would be the one holding all the cards after the wedding, using it to lock down her financial security while hiding her true nature.

"Robin, please," she sobbed, dropping to her knees on the rug and crawling toward him, grabbing the hem of his trousers. "I was just stressed! The wedding planning is overwhelming! Everyone makes mistakes! I love you!"

Robin looked down at the woman clutching his legs, his expression utterly devoid of warmth.

"You didn't make a mistake, Tabitha," Robin whispered, his voice heavy with grief. "You just revealed who you really are."

Before Tabitha could scream, the heavy double doors of the drawing room swung open, and Mr. Vance, our senior legal counsel, strode into the room carrying a sleek leather briefcase, a grim expression on his face.

"Mrs. Harrington," the attorney nodded respectfully. "I understand we have an urgent matter to resolve."

"Yes, Mr. Vance," I said, sliding the manila folder and the digital recorder across the desk. "Let's begin."
