Chapter 5 - THE STERLING CONNECTIONThe revelation hit the room like a physical blow.

I stood up from the desk, pacing slowly toward the window. The pieces of the puzzle were finally snapping together with terrifying clarity. Tabitha hadn't accidentally bumped into Robin at an upscale charity gala six months ago. It hadn't been a chance romance born under the stars.

It was a calculated infiltration.

Viktor Sterling knew that a frontal assault on Harrington Shipping would fail; our board of directors was too loyal, and our legal defenses were too airtight. But a backdoor entry through an emotional, trusting heir like Robin? That was a masterstroke of corporate espionage.

"Get Robin down here right now," I told James, my voice rigid with resolve.

Ten minutes later, Robin walked into the study, looking pale and restless. He had spent the morning canceling wedding vendors and fielding awkward calls from relatives.

"Mom, what's going on?" Robin asked, noticing the grim expressions on the faces of the security team. "James said it's an emergency."

I walked over to the desk, turned the monitor toward him, and pointed at the corporate profile displayed on the screen.

"Have you ever seen this man, Robin?" I asked quietly.

Robin stepped closer, squinting at the photograph of a stern, silver-haired man in an expensive bespoke suit. "That's Viktor Sterling. The CEO of Apex Global. Our biggest rival. Why are we looking at him?"

"Because," I said, handing him the printed transcript of Tabitha’s intercepted phone call, "your fiancée wasn't just a cruel snob. She was Viktor Sterling’s niece. And yesterday morning, right before she poured dirty water over my head, she successfully executed a fifty-million-dollar wire transfer from our capital accounts into an offshore shell corporation."

Robin stared at the paper, his face turning the color of ash. His knees buckled slightly, and he caught himself against the edge of the desk.

"Fifty... fifty million?" he choked out. "That's... that's the primary capital reserve for the Pacific expansion project. I signed those papers. She told me it was the final contract for the Monaco resort deposit."

"She played you, son," James said gently, placing a hand on Robin’s shoulder. "Sterling’s people are pros. They used her to bypass our internal firewall by exploiting your signature as Vice President of Operations."

"I'm going to kill her," Robin whispered, a dark, dangerous fury flashing in his eyes for the first time. He turned toward the door. "I'm going to go straight to her father's house and—"

"Stop!" I commanded, my voice cutting through his rage like a whip.

Robin stopped, turning back to look at me in shock.

"If you go storming over there like a fool, you will trigger their emergency legal defenses, and that money will vanish into untraceable cryptocurrency wallets within the hour," I said sternly, walking right up to him and looking him directly in the eyes. "We don't get angry, Robin. We get even."

"How?" Robin asked, his breath coming in shallow gasps. "How do we get fifty million dollars back from Viktor Sterling?"

I turned back to Chloe and James. "Can we trace the secondary account? Do we know where the money is sitting right now?"

"It's currently held in an escrow account under a shell company called 'Meridian Holdings' at the First National Bank downtown," Chloe replied quickly, tapping her tablet. "The final clearance trigger hasn't been activated yet. The transfer sits in a twenty-four-hour holding pattern pending final electronic sign-off from the primary account holder—which, technically, is still Robin, since the corporate seal hasn't been officially registered to Sterling yet."

A cold, calculating smile slowly spread across my face.

"Then let's give them the sign-off they're waiting for," I said softly. "Only, we're going to change the destination account at the very last second."
