Chapter 4 - THE HUNT FOR LILYA Knock at the ICU DoorMatthew’s phone chimed with an urgent alert from the hospital security system he had personally installed for high-profile guests. He looked at the screen.

Two men in dark suits and a woman carrying a state-issued clipboard were standing at the door of Sarah Stevens’s ICU room.
“Who are they?” Matthew demanded, staring at Alexandra.
“That would be Child Protective Services, accompanied by our private security detail,” Alexandra said, smoothing her skirt. “An anonymous tip was placed. A sick, unconscious mother, a child wandering the streets alone, and a billionaire CEO who has essentially kidnapped her from her home. By the time the police sort this out, Lily will be in a state facility, Sarah will be transferred to a low-cost public hospice, and you will be facing charges of interference.”
“You monster,” Matthew hissed.
“I am a businesswoman,” Alexandra replied. “And I always protect my investments. Go save the girl, Matthew. While you’re playing hero, we will finalize the vote.”
Matthew didn’t waste another second. He sprinted out of the boardroom, ignoring the shouts of the board members behind him.
The Escape from Seattle GeneralMatthew arrived at the hospital ten minutes later, his tires screeching in the ambulance bay. He ran through the sliding doors, his heart hammering against his ribs.
He reached the pediatric ICU just as the CPS worker, a stern-looking woman named Agent Vance, was trying to coax Lily out of her mother’s room.
“Sweetheart, we just want to keep you safe,” Vance was saying, her voice thin and forced. “Your mother is very sick, and this man isn't your family.”
“No!” Lily cried, clinging to the metal railing of her mother’s bed. “He promised he wouldn't leave! He has my quarter!”
“Step away from the child,” Matthew commanded, his voice echoing down the corridor.
The two security guards hired by Cascade stepped into his path. “Mr. Reynolds, we have orders to secure the minor for her own safety. Please don't make this difficult.”
“These orders are invalid,” Matthew said, pulling out his phone and dialing a number. “You’re standing in a private wing funded entirely by the Reynolds Foundation. If you don't leave this floor in five seconds, I will have the hospital chief of security arrest you for trespassing and harassment.”
“We have a state warrant, Mr. Reynolds,” Agent Vance said, holding up a piece of paper.
Matthew looked at the paper. It was signed by a local judge known to be on the payroll of Cascade’s primary legal counsel. Alexandra’s reach was deeper than he had ever imagined.
He looked at Lily. Her eyes were wide with terror, filled with the exact same fear she had shown at the grocery counter.
“I do not want another family without her,” her words echoed in his mind.
Matthew made a decision that would change his life forever. He stepped past the guards, grabbed Lily in his arms, and ran.

“Stop him!” Vance screamed.
Matthew didn’t stop. He pushed through the fire exit doors, carrying Lily down the concrete stairs. His lungs burned, but he didn't slow down. He reached his SUV in the basement garage, buckled Lily into the back seat, and tore out into the rainy Seattle night just as the sirens began to wail behind him.
