Chapter 6 - THE TRAP IS SPRUNG

The UltimatumThe next morning, Matthew’s phone rang. It was an unlisted number.

“Matthew,” Alexandra’s voice was cold as dry ice. “I hope you and the little girl are comfortable. The police are currently looking for you on kidnapping charges. Your sister—oh yes, I know you’ve figured it out by now—is currently on a ventilator. It would be a shame if the hospital had a sudden power fluctuation in her wing.”

Matthew gripped the phone so hard his knuckles turned white. “If you touch her, Alexandra, I will personally tear down everything you’ve ever built.”

“You have nothing left, Matthew,” she sneered. “The board has approved the merger. All we need is your final signature to waive your personal veto rights. If you sign the waiver, I will ensure the police charges vanish, and Sarah will receive the best medical care money can buy. If you don't... well, a ward of the state doesn't have a very long life expectancy.”

“Where do we meet?” Matthew asked, his voice dead.

“The grand opening of our new flagship store in downtown Seattle. Tonight at eight. In front of the press and the board. You will sign the papers, step down gracefully, and hand over the child. If you try anything, the police will arrest you on live television.”

Matthew looked at Lily, who was watching him with wide, trusting eyes.

“I’ll be there,” Matthew said.

The Final PreparationMatthew spent the afternoon making three phone calls.

The first was to Cascade’s chief security officer, a loyal friend who had served with his father.

The second was to the federal prosecutor’s office.

The third was to a local news anchor who had been trying to get an exclusive interview with Matthew for years.

“We have one shot at this, Lily,” Matthew said, kneeling in front of the little girl. “Tonight, we are going to get your mommy back. But I need you to be very brave.”
