CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Who Stole A Life

Eleanor didn't sleep.

She couldn't.

By sunrise, every photograph, every hospital record, every newspaper clipping covered the floor of her mansion.

For twenty-three years she had believed grief had made her overlook nothing.

Now she realized...

Someone had carefully made sure she never looked too closely.

The missing page haunted her.

"The wrong baby was buried."

Who wrote it?

Why hide it?

And if the baby in the grave wasn't her daughter...

Whose child had she mourned for over two decades?

The next morning Eleanor quietly returned to the restaurant.

Emily was already serving breakfast.

She smiled politely.

"You came back."

"I hoped you would."

Eleanor forced herself to smile.

"I only wanted to apologize."

Emily laughed softly.

"For yesterday?"

"You looked like you'd seen a ghost."

Eleanor whispered,

"Maybe I had."

Over the next hour, they talked between customers.

Emily revealed she had grown up in a small town nearly three hundred miles away.

She had never known her biological parents.

According to the adoption papers, she had been abandoned outside a church at just three days old.

Three days old.

Not born there.

Not registered there.

Simply...

Found.

Eleanor's heart pounded.

"Do you still have those adoption papers?"

Emily nodded.

"My mother kept everything."

That evening, Emily invited Eleanor to the modest house where her adoptive mother, Grace Bennett, still lived.

Grace welcomed Eleanor warmly...

Until she noticed the old hospital bracelet Eleanor had brought with her.

The color drained from Grace's face.

Her teacup slipped from her trembling hands.

Crash.

Silence filled the room.

Grace whispered only one sentence.

"You should have burned that bracelet."

Emily stared.

"What does that mean?"

Grace closed her eyes.

For years she had promised herself she would never tell the truth.

But secrets don't disappear.

They simply wait.

"I didn't find you outside a church."

Emily froze.

"I... bought you."

The room exploded into silence.

"You WHAT?"

Grace burst into tears.

"A nurse came to me the night of the hospital fire."

"She said a wealthy family would never notice."

"She said the baby would die anyway."

"I believed I was saving you."

Emily backed away in horror.

"No..."

Grace reached into an old wooden cabinet.

Inside lay a faded envelope.

Still sealed.

She handed it to Eleanor.

"It was supposed to stay hidden forever."

Inside...

There was only one photograph.

A nurse.

Holding two newborn girls.

One wore a hospital bracelet labeled Emily Whitmore.

The other...

Was labeled...

Sophia Bennett.

Someone had switched the babies before the fire even began.

And someone had made millions because of it.
