CHAPTER 1 — THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The rain in Mexico City that night was so violent that even the richest people in the city looked small beneath it.
Thunder exploded above Paseo de la Reforma. Luxury cars rushed through the flooded streets, their headlights cutting through the darkness like knives.
Inside one of those cars sat Rodrigo Salvatierra, the man everyone called the “untouchable heir.”
At only 34 years old, Rodrigo controlled one of the largest construction empires in Mexico. His name was printed on skyscrapers, hotels, and business magazines.
But behind the expensive suit and cold expression was a man who had spent the last two years living like a ghost.
Because two years ago…
The woman he loved died.
Or at least, that was what everyone told him.
Rodrigo stepped out of his black SUV in front of the Imperial Hotel, adjusting his jacket while rain soaked his shoulders.
Tonight was supposed to be important.
His mother, Doña Beatriz Salvatierra, had gathered the company’s board members for a private dinner.
She said they needed to discuss the future of the family business.
But Rodrigo knew his mother.
Nothing she did was ever “just a meeting.”
He was already irritated.
His driver opened the umbrella.
“Mr. Salvatierra, should we hurry inside?”
Rodrigo nodded.
Then he heard a voice.
A desperate voice.
A voice that sounded like someone who had lost everything.
“Sir… please…”
Rodrigo stopped.
Under the hotel’s entrance awning stood a woman holding a small child wrapped in an old gray blanket.
She looked like someone the world had forgotten.
Her shoes were torn.
Her clothes were soaked.
Her hair was uneven, as if someone had cut it without care.
There was a purple bruise near her eye.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
But her arms were wrapped tightly around the little girl sleeping against her chest.
“Sir, do you need someone to clean?” she begged.
“I can wash floors, cook, organize rooms… anything.”
Her voice cracked.
“My daughter hasn’t eaten properly in two days.”
The hotel employees looked away.
Some judged her.
Some ignored her.
Because in a city full of wealthy people, poor people often became invisible.
Rodrigo looked at her for a moment.
Then he turned away.
He had problems of his own.
He had spent two years mourning a wife he lost.
He had spent two years waking up every night from nightmares.
He had spent two years blaming himself.
He didn’t have the strength to carry someone else’s tragedy.
But then…
The woman lifted her face.
And Rodrigo stopped breathing.
The world around him disappeared.
The rain.
The cars.
The voices.
Everything vanished.
Because that face…
That impossible face…
Was the face he had touched every morning.
The face he had kissed before leaving home.
The face he had held while promising:
“I will protect you forever.”
His lips moved, but no sound came out.
Then finally, a whisper escaped.
“Camila…”
The woman froze.
Her eyes filled with fear.
She immediately hugged the little girl tighter.
“Don’t.”
Her voice trembled.
“Please don’t do anything.”
Rodrigo stared at her.
His heart was pounding so hard he could barely breathe.
“Camila… you’re alive?”
The woman looked around nervously.
Then she whispered:
“Your mother is watching us.”
Rodrigo slowly looked up.
Through the restaurant window on the second floor…
There she was.
Doña Beatriz Salvatierra.
His mother.
Elegant.
Calm.
Wearing a black designer dress.
Holding a glass of wine.
And watching them.
Like she already knew this moment would happen.
Rodrigo felt ice run through his veins.
Two years ago, Camila Salvatierra disappeared while traveling to Cuernavaca.
The police found her burned car near a highway.
The evidence was overwhelming.
A dental record confirmed her identity.
A funeral was arranged.
A closed coffin was buried.
Rodrigo had stood beside an empty grave, crying until his knees collapsed.
His mother had held his shoulder and said:
“Accept it, son. Camila is gone.”
But she wasn’t.
She was standing in front of him.
Alive.
Terrified.
And holding a child.
Rodrigo looked down.
The little girl was sleeping peacefully.
A tiny hand was holding onto Camila’s coat.
His voice became barely audible.
“Who is she?”
Camila closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“She’s your daughter.”
Rodrigo felt like the ground disappeared.
“My… daughter?”
“Her name is Valentina.”
He stared at the child.
A child he never knew existed.
A daughter he never had the chance to hold.
A daughter who had grown up without him.
“Camila…”
His voice broke.
“You were pregnant?”
She nodded.
“I found out three weeks before they took me.”
Rodrigo clenched his fists.
Someone had stolen two years from him.
Two years with his wife.
Two years with his daughter.
But before he could ask another question, Camila grabbed his hand.
“Listen to me.”
Her eyes were full of fear.
“Your mother cannot know that I found you.”
Rodrigo looked at her.
“Why?”
Camila swallowed hard.
“Because she didn’t just kill my identity…”
“She tried to erase me.”
Rodrigo brought them into a private hotel suite.
He told security not to disturb him.
He closed the curtains.
Disabled the room cameras.
And for the first time in two years…
He allowed himself to believe.
Camila placed Valentina in his arms.
Rodrigo froze.
The little girl opened her eyes.
For a few seconds, she looked at him.
Then she touched his face with her tiny fingers.
A strange feeling hit him.
Because she had his eyes.
His expression.
His small scar on her eyebrow came from him.
Rodrigo’s hands trembled.
“I missed everything…”
His voice broke.
“I missed her first words…”
“Her first steps…”
“I wasn’t there…”
Camila looked away.
“I wanted you to be.”
Rodrigo looked at her.
“Tell me everything.”
And she did.
She showed him the scars on her wrists.
The marks left by the people who held her captive.
The pain she survived.
The nights she spent locked inside an abandoned house outside Valle de Bravo.
She told him how Beatriz had paid criminals to make her disappear.
How she had arranged the fake dental identification.
How she had buried Camila’s name forever.
Rodrigo’s blood turned cold.
“But why?”
Camila looked at him.
“Because of your father’s will.”
Rodrigo frowned.
“My father?”
“Your father left a clause.”
She took a deep breath.
“If you died or became incapable of leading the company, control would temporarily pass to your wife.”
Rodrigo slowly understood.
Not his mother.
Not the board.
Not the family.
His wife.
Camila.
“She wanted the company.”
Camila nodded.
“She needed me gone.”
A silence filled the room.
Then Rodrigo’s phone rang.
The name on the screen made his expression change.
Beatriz.
He answered.
“Where are you?”
His mother’s voice sounded sweet.
Too sweet.
“Dinner begins in twenty minutes.”
Rodrigo said nothing.
Then she continued:
“And please stop wasting your time with strangers outside.”
His eyes narrowed.
“They are not your problem.”
Camila went pale.
She had heard enough.
Beatriz knew.
She always knew.
Rodrigo ended the call.
Then he opened a hidden compartment inside his briefcase.
Inside was another phone.
Camila looked confused.
“What is that?”
Rodrigo stared at the screen.
“The reason I survived these last two years.”
He had never completely believed the accident.
The evidence was too perfect.
Too clean.
Too convenient.
For 18 months, he secretly investigated.
He hired private investigators.
He tracked money transfers.
He collected information.
And tonight…
He finally found the missing piece.
He typed one message.
“She’s alive. Activate Operation Phoenix.”
Then he looked at his daughter.
Kissed her forehead.
And whispered:
“Daddy is home.”
But just as he walked toward the door…
A sound came from outside.
A knock.
Three slow knocks.
Camila froze.
Rodrigo stopped.
Another knock.
Then a man’s voice.
“We know you’re inside.”
Camila’s face lost all color.
“No…”
Rodrigo looked at her.
“Who is it?”
Her lips trembled.
“The same men who took me.”
The door handle moved.
Someone was trying to open it.
Then a voice came through the door.
“Mr. Salvatierra…”
“We came to bring your wife back.”
Rodrigo stepped forward.
But Camila grabbed his arm.
“Don’t open that door.”
“Why?”
She looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“Because if they are here…”
“It means your mother never planned to let me leave alive.”
The lights suddenly went out.
The room became completely dark.
And in the darkness…
Rodrigo heard a whisper from outside:
May you like
“Tonight, the Salvatierra family loses everything.”
