Chapter 2 - THE SECRETS OF HAWK ONE

Viral Title Idea: The arrogant business class passenger watched in horror as the "grease-monkey" single dad walked into the cockpit to save them all.

The cockpit was a scene of absolute chaos. The primary display screens were flashing red with warnings: HYDRAULIC FAILURE. DUAL ENG STALL warning imminent.

The captain was slumped forward over the controls, unconscious from a sudden medical emergency. The first officer, a young man named Marcus, was bleeding from a deep gash on his forehead, desperately trying to hold the heavy control column back with one hand while managing a failing radio with the other.

"I've got the controls!" Daniel yelled, sliding into the captain's seat with a fluid movement that defied his years away from the military. His hands, which had spent the last three years covered in transmission fluid, locked onto the commercial yoke.

To an ordinary person, the array of switches was a nightmare. To Daniel, it was a language he spoke fluently.

"Who are you?!" Marcus gasped, wiping blood from his eyes.

"Major Carter. F-22 Raptor division, retired," Daniel barked, flipping three overhead switches in rapid succession to stabilize the auxiliary power unit. "Talk to me, Marcus. What do we have?"

"Rapid decompression... engine two caught ice and surged... we lost the primary hydraulic line," Marcus stammered, his voice filled with panic. "Denver center isn't responding on the emergency frequency!"

Daniel checked the altimeter. They were passing through 24,000 feet, dropping at a dangerous 3,000 feet per minute over the rugged, unforgiving peaks of the Rocky Mountains. If they didn't level out in the next ninety seconds, the structural strain would tear the wings off the commercial airliner.

Back in the business-class cabin, the woman in the cream blazer sat trembling. She looked over at Ethan, who was staring intently at his plastic toy, whispering his father's words over and over: "These hands have been useful. There is no shame in that."

A wave of profound shame washed over her. She had judged a man by his dirty clothes, completely blind to the fact that those same hands were currently holding the lives of 150 people steady in the sky.

In the cockpit, Daniel wrestled with the heavy yoke. The commercial jet lacked the fly-by-wire responsiveness of his beloved F-22, but he knew aerodynamic limits better than anyone alive.

"We need to dump fuel and find an emergency vector," Daniel said, his eyes scanning the horizon. "But the cloud cover is too thick. We're flying blind into a mountain range."

Suddenly, a crackle came over the military-grade emergency frequency.

"Unknown aircraft, this is Viper Flight of the Colorado Air National Guard. We have you on radar. You are descending into restricted airspace. Acknowledge."

Daniel’s eyes lit up. He grabbed the headset. "Viper Flight, this is Major Daniel Carter, call sign Hawk One, operating emergency flight status. We have a dual hydraulic failure and an incapacitated pilot. Requesting immediate visual escort and vector out of the peaks!"

There was a dead silence on the radio for three agonizing seconds. Then, a voice filled with absolute shock responded.

"...Hawk One? As in... the Ghost of Langley? Sir, is that really you?"
