CHAPTER 2 — She Pretended to Be Weak... While Quietly Preparing Their Downfall

No one spoke.
Not even the birds.
The ranch that had once echoed with laughter now stood frozen beneath a suffocating silence.
Valentina slowly looked from her father's trembling hands...
To the bruises hidden beneath her mother's sleeves.
She wanted to scream.
She wanted to throw every one of them out of the house that very second.
Instead...
She smiled.
It wasn't a warm smile.
It was calm.
Dangerously calm.
Years of working in corporate negotiations had taught her one lesson:
The angriest person usually loses.
The quiet one...
Wins.
"Valentina!"
Her mother rushed forward first.
But instead of embracing her daughter...
She grabbed her arm.
Her fingers shook violently.
"Please..."
"Don't say anything."
The words stunned Valentina.
"Mom..."
"What happened here?"
Doña Carmen forced another smile.
"The heat is making you imagine things."
"We're fine."
"We're only helping around the ranch."
Helping?
Valentina looked toward the porch.
Doña Estela was already sitting back down as though nothing had happened.
She crossed one leg over the other.
"So..."
"You're the daughter who sends money."
Her tone dripped with mockery.
"I expected someone richer."
Mónica finally slipped her phone into her handbag.
"Oh, Valentina."
"You should've told us you were coming."
"We would've prepared something."
Valentina met her eyes.
"I wanted it to be a surprise."
"It certainly was."
For one brief second...
Mónica's confident expression flickered.
Had she noticed something?
Had Valentina seen too much?
Before anyone could speak again...
Federico's pickup truck rolled into the yard.
Dust swirled behind the tires.
He climbed out carrying grocery bags.
His face lit up.
"Vale!"
He hurried toward his sister with open arms.
She hugged him.
But something felt different.
His expensive watch.
New leather boots.
Designer sunglasses.
None of those matched the brother she remembered.
Federico had never cared about luxury.
What changed?
Then she noticed something else.
The truck.
Brand new.
Still wearing temporary dealership plates.
Valentina had spoken to him just two weeks earlier.
He claimed business was terrible.
He said the ranch barely made enough money to survive.
So...
Where had the eighty-thousand-peso truck come from?
"You like it?"
Federico laughed proudly.
"I finally upgraded."
"Mónica convinced me life is too short to drive old junk."
Valentina smiled politely.
Inside...
She was already adding another piece to the puzzle.
Dinner was awkward.
Painfully awkward.
Doña Carmen insisted on serving everyone.
Every plate.
Every drink.
Every napkin.
Whenever she sat down...
Doña Estela found another chore.
"Carmen..."
"The tortillas are cold."
"Carmen..."
"This soup needs more salt."
"Carmen..."
"Clean the kitchen before dessert."
Each command landed like another slap.
Valentina watched carefully.
No one questioned it.
Not Federico.
Not Mónica.
As though this had become completely normal.
At one point...
Her father quietly reached for another tortilla.
Before he could take it...
Mónica removed the basket.
"Leave some."
"You've already eaten enough today."
Don Ernesto immediately withdrew his hand.
He apologized.
Apologized...
For trying to eat.
Valentina nearly crushed the fork in her hand.
That night...
Unable to sleep...
She quietly walked downstairs.
The old ranch creaked beneath her footsteps.
Moonlight spilled through the hallway windows.
Then...
She heard whispers.
Voices coming from the kitchen.
She stopped.
Carefully.
Mónica spoke first.
"We can't let her stay long."
Federico sighed.
"She's only visiting."
"You don't know my sister."
"If she starts asking questions..."
"Everything falls apart."
Valentina's heartbeat quickened.
Everything?
Doña Estela laughed softly.
"Relax."
"The old fools won't say anything."
"They're terrified."
"And if they do..."
She lowered her voice.
"We still have those papers."
Valentina frowned.
What papers?
Federico sounded nervous.
"I still don't think forging Dad's signature was necessary."
Valentina froze.
Forging?
Her father's signature?
Doña Estela answered without hesitation.
"It was the only way."
"If those documents are ever discovered..."
"This ranch will belong to us forever."
Valentina felt the blood drain from her face.
She stepped backward...
Accidentally brushing against an old flowerpot.
CRACK.
The sound echoed through the hallway.
"Who's there?"
Mónica shouted.
Footsteps rushed toward the kitchen door.
Valentina slipped into the shadows just before the lights switched on.
She held her breath.
Federico searched the hallway.
Nothing.
After a long moment...
They returned inside.
Valentina waited until the voices faded.
Then she quietly climbed the stairs.
Her hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From realization.
This wasn't simply abuse.
It wasn't greed.
It was something much bigger.
Someone had forged legal documents.
Someone had stolen from her parents.
Someone believed they already owned the ranch.
Back inside her bedroom...
She opened the brown envelope she had brought from Mexico City.
Inside was another sealed envelope.
One she had never opened.
It had been given to her years ago by the family attorney with one instruction.
"Only open this if you ever believe your parents are in danger."
She slowly broke the seal.
A single handwritten letter slid onto the bed.
At the bottom...
Beneath the signature...
Was a sentence that made her entire body go cold.
"If you are reading this... your brother has already betrayed this family."
Valentina stared at the page in disbelief.
Outside...
A figure stood silently beneath her bedroom window...
Watching her through the darkness.
She had no idea...
May you like
She wasn't the only one preparing for war.
