CHAPTER 5 — The Murder Case Reopened... Then the Detective Revealed the One Name No One Expected

The hunting rifle hit the ground with a dull thud.

No one moved.

The warm afternoon breeze swept across the ranch, carrying only the sound of rustling leaves and the distant cry of a hawk.

Valentina's eyes remained fixed on the gray-haired investigator.

"Did you just say... murder?"

The man nodded.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

"My name is Ricardo Salazar."

"I'm with the State Special Investigations Division."

He reached into his leather briefcase and removed a thick file.

The edges of the folder were worn from years of being opened and closed.

Across the front...

Stamped in faded red ink...

Were two chilling words.

UNSOLVED HOMICIDE

Don Ernesto's knees nearly gave out.

Valentina caught him before he collapsed.

"Dad..."

"What is this?"

He couldn't answer.

His lips trembled.

His eyes filled with shame.

For the first time in her life...

Her father looked terrified of the truth.

Ricardo opened the file.

"Twenty-two years ago..."

"A man named Alejandro Rivas disappeared less than two miles from this ranch."

"He was never seen again."

Mónica folded her arms.

"And what does that have to do with us?"

The detective ignored her.

"Mr. Rivas owned nearly four hundred acres in this valley."

"He was negotiating the sale of part of his land."

"Then..."

"He vanished."

"No body."

"No suspects."

"No witnesses."

"The investigation went cold."

Valentina frowned.

"So why reopen it now?"

Ricardo pulled a sealed evidence bag from the file.

Inside was a rusted silver pocket watch.

The initials engraved on the back read:

A.R.

"This was discovered last month."

"During construction on the new highway."

"It had been buried for more than twenty years."

He paused.

"It led us back here."

Mónica laughed.

"That's ridiculous."

"Finding an old watch proves nothing."

Ricardo calmly nodded.

"You're right."

"The watch alone proves nothing."

He reached into the folder again.

This time...

He removed a faded photograph.

The picture showed four smiling young men standing beside the unfinished ranch house.

One of them was unmistakably a young Don Ernesto.

Another...

Was Alejandro Rivas.

Valentina had never seen the photo before.

But it was the third man who caught her attention.

He looked strangely familiar.

She studied the face.

The sharp jawline.

The deep-set eyes.

The crooked smile.

Then realization struck like lightning.

She looked at Mónica.

Then back at the photograph.

No...

It couldn't be.

The third man looked exactly like Mónica's late father.

Ricardo watched her expression carefully.

"You noticed."

Valentina whispered,

"Who is he?"

The detective answered quietly.

"Tomás Ortega."

"Mónica's father."

Silence.

Mónica's confident smile vanished.

She stared at the detective.

"You stay away from my father."

"He died years ago."

Ricardo nodded.

"He did."

"But before his death..."

"He left something behind."

He opened another envelope.

Inside...

Was an old cassette tape.

The detective held it carefully.

"This recording was found in a safety deposit box."

"It was opened only after Tomás Ortega died."

Mónica's breathing became uneven.

"No..."

Ricardo continued.

"The recording contains a confession."

"A confession about Alejandro Rivas."

Federico stepped forward.

"This is insane."

"My father-in-law had nothing to do with this."

Ricardo looked directly at him.

"Maybe."

"But your wife knew."

The words echoed across the yard.

Mónica's face turned pale.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

The detective's voice remained calm.

"The tape says otherwise."

Valentina looked at Mónica.

For the first time...

She saw genuine fear.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

Ricardo continued.

"Tomás admitted that Alejandro Rivas discovered a fraudulent land transfer."

"He threatened to expose everyone involved."

"That same night..."

"He disappeared."

Valentina felt the ground shift beneath her.

The forged documents.

The hidden deeds.

The mysterious letter.

None of this had started with Federico.

None of it had started with Mónica.

The corruption reached back decades.

Then Ricardo said something that stunned everyone.

"According to the confession..."

"One person refused to participate."

He slowly turned toward Don Ernesto.

"You."

Valentina looked at her father.

He closed his eyes.

A tear slid down his weathered face.

"I tried to stop them."

"I failed."

"I should have gone to the police."

"I was a coward."

Mónica suddenly exploded.

"Enough!"

She pointed at Don Ernesto.

"Tell her the whole story!"

"Tell your precious daughter why you stayed silent!"

"You weren't protecting your family..."

"You were protecting yourself!"

Don Ernesto whispered,

"I know."

"I've lived with that guilt every day."

Before anyone could speak again...

A loud engine roared from the far side of the property.

Everyone turned.

A black SUV smashed through the old wooden gate.

Dust filled the air.

The vehicle stopped only a few yards away.

Four men climbed out.

All wearing expensive suits.

None of them looked like police.

The tallest man removed his sunglasses.

He smiled at Ricardo.

"You should've left this case buried."

Ricardo's expression hardened.

"I wondered when you'd show up."

The stranger glanced at Valentina.

Then at the iron box still sitting near the old well.

His smile disappeared.

"So..."

"You found it."

He slowly reached inside his jacket.

The police officer immediately drew his weapon.

"Don't move!"

Instead of stopping...

The man calmly pulled out a folded document.

He raised it high enough for everyone to see.

Across the top...

In bold official lettering...

Were the words:

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ALEJANDRO RIVAS

Valentina's heart nearly stopped.

The stranger smiled coldly.

"You've all been fighting over the wrong ranch."

He looked directly into Valentina's eyes.

"Because half of the land you've lived on your entire life..."

May you like

"...was never legally owned by your family."
