CHAPTER 3 — The Letter That Changed Everything... And the Secret Hidden for Twenty Years

Valentina couldn't breathe.
She read the last sentence again.
And again.
"If you are reading this... your brother has already betrayed this family."
Her father's handwriting.
There was no mistake.
Every curved letter.
Every uneven line caused by the arthritis that had slowly weakened his hands.
It was unmistakably his.
Her fingers trembled as she unfolded the remaining pages.
The letter had been written almost six years earlier.
Long before Federico married Mónica.
Long before Doña Estela entered their lives.
Long before the ranch became a prison.
"My dearest Valentina,"
"If this letter has reached your hands, it means I was right to worry."
"There are things I never had the courage to tell you while I was alive... or while I was still strong enough to protect this family."
"People believe greed begins with money."
"It doesn't."
"It begins with envy."
Valentina swallowed hard.
She continued reading.
"Your brother has always loved you..."
"But he has also spent most of his life believing everything came easier for you."
"He never understood how hard you worked."
"He only saw that opportunities always seemed to find you."
"I tried to teach him differently."
"I failed."
A tear rolled down Valentina's cheek.
She remembered the little boy who used to chase butterflies through the cornfields.
The brother who once defended her from school bullies.
When had that boy disappeared?
The next paragraph made her stomach tighten.
"Three years ago..."
"Federico secretly asked me to transfer the ranch into his name."
"He claimed it would make getting business loans easier."
"When I refused..."
"He stopped speaking to me for nearly four months."
Valentina's eyes widened.
Her father had never mentioned any of this.
Not once.
Then...
She reached the page that changed everything.
"The ranch everyone sees today..."
"Is only half of what truly belongs to this family."
Valentina frowned.
What did that mean?
She kept reading.
"Your grandfather never trusted banks."
"Before he died..."
"He left something hidden on this land."
"Only I know where it is."
"Only you will know after reading this letter."
Valentina's pulse quickened.
Hidden?
What had her grandfather left behind?
Money?
Land deeds?
Something even more valuable?
Before the letter revealed the answer...
A loud thud echoed outside her bedroom window.
Someone had moved.
Valentina immediately folded the papers.
She quietly turned off the bedside lamp.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Carefully...
She stepped toward the curtain.
Barely moving the fabric.
Outside...
A silhouette stood beneath the mesquite tree.
Watching the house.
Watching her room.
The figure wore a dark cowboy hat.
Too far away to recognize.
But unmistakably...
Someone had been spying on her.
The stranger remained motionless for several seconds.
Then disappeared into the darkness beyond the barn.
Valentina didn't sleep.
At sunrise...
She hid the letter inside the lining of her suitcase.
No one could ever find it.
Especially not Federico.
When she walked downstairs...
Breakfast was already underway.
Or rather...
Her parents were serving everyone else.
Don Ernesto carried hot coffee despite his swollen hands.
Doña Carmen stood beside the stove making fresh tortillas.
Neither of them sat down.
Neither of them ate.
Doña Estela noticed Valentina watching.
She smiled smugly.
"Your parents insist on helping."
"They say working keeps them young."
Mónica laughed.
"They get bored otherwise."
Valentina forced herself to smile.
Inside...
She was counting every lie.
Every insult.
Every humiliation.
Soon...
Each one would have a price.
After breakfast...
Federico approached her.
"So..."
"How long are you staying?"
Valentina shrugged casually.
"I haven't decided."
His smile faded.
"You have work in Mexico City."
"I can work remotely."
Silence.
Just for a second.
But long enough for Valentina to notice the panic in his eyes.
He wanted her gone.
Fast.
Too fast.
Later that morning...
While everyone believed she was unpacking...
Valentina quietly searched the ranch.
The old barn.
The storage shed.
The abandoned chicken coop.
She compared everything with the rough map her father had sketched inside the letter.
Finally...
She reached the oldest part of the property.
A dried-up well no one had used for decades.
According to the map...
The secret was nearby.
She searched for almost an hour.
Nothing.
Until...
Her foot struck something buried beneath loose dirt.
A flat stone.
Unlike the others.
Perfectly square.
Someone had placed it there deliberately.
Her heartbeat echoed in her ears.
She knelt.
Brushed away years of dust.
Then lifted it.
Underneath...
She found an old iron box.
Rust covered every inch.
The lock had almost dissolved with age.
Across the lid...
Barely visible...
Were four carved initials.
E.H.
Ernesto Hernández.
Her father's initials.
Hands shaking...
Valentina forced the lid open.
Inside...
Was not gold.
Not cash.
Not jewelry.
Instead...
There were dozens of yellowed documents.
Old photographs.
Property maps.
And one thick envelope marked in faded ink.
"OPEN ONLY IF THE FAMILY IS BETRAYED."
Before she could touch it...
A voice froze her blood.
"What exactly are you looking for?"
Valentina turned sharply.
Standing less than ten feet away...
Leaning casually against the fence...
Was Mónica.
Smiling.
But her eyes held no warmth.
Only suspicion.
Only calculation.
And in her right hand...
She was holding a loaded hunting rifle.
For several endless seconds...
Neither woman moved.
Neither woman blinked.
The morning breeze swept across the empty fields.
This was no longer a family dispute.
It had become a battle.
May you like
And only one side knew how far the other was willing to go.
To Be Continued...
