CHAPTER 4 — The Billionaire Opened the Secret File... And Realized His Entire Life Was a Lie

Emily's hands were still trembling.

She had finally returned to the man she loved.

But the note she slipped into Ethan's hand changed everything.

Victoria was only the beginning.

Ethan unfolded another tiny piece of paper hidden inside.

There was only one address.

A storage facility on the outskirts of Manhattan.

Locker 317.

Emily whispered, "Before they took me away... I hid everything there."

"What is everything?"

"My proof."

That same night, Ethan drove there with Emily and Lily.

No bodyguards.

No lawyers.

Only the three of them.

The locker had not been opened in seven years.

Inside were dusty boxes, old hard drives, bank statements, photographs... and one thick black folder labeled:

THE CALDWELL PROJECT

Ethan frowned.

"I've never heard of this."

Emily looked away.

"Because your father never wanted you to."

He slowly opened the folder.

The first page made his knees go weak.

It wasn't Victoria's signature.

It was his father's.

Richard Caldwell.

The man Ethan had admired his entire life.

The documents revealed millions of dollars secretly transferred into offshore accounts months before Emily's "accident."

Then came surveillance photos.

Emily being followed.

Private investigators.

Fake medical reports.

Forged police documents declaring her dead.

None of it had started with Victoria.

She had only been following someone else's orders.

Ethan whispered,

"My father..."

Emily nodded through tears.

"He said I wasn't worthy of the Caldwell family."

"He told me I would disappear forever."

"And when I refused to leave you..."

"...the accident happened."

Ethan could barely breathe.

Every memory of his father suddenly felt poisoned.

Just then...

A hidden compartment inside the folder slid open.

Inside was a flash drive.

On it were only four handwritten words.

PLAY THIS ALONE.

Ethan connected it to his laptop.

A video appeared.

Richard Caldwell sat behind his office desk, speaking calmly to the camera.

"If you're watching this, Ethan..."

"...then I am probably dead."

"I did what I believed was necessary."

"Our family wasn't built on love."

"It was built on sacrifice."

Then Richard leaned closer.

His next sentence froze everyone in the room.

"Emily wasn't the real target."

Ethan stared at the screen.

"What?"

Richard continued.

"The child was."

Emily instantly grabbed Lily and held her tightly.

Richard sighed.

"There is something about Lily that you don't know."

"Something that several powerful people would kill to keep buried."

The video suddenly cut to black.

At the exact same moment...

Every light inside the storage building went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then...

Someone knocked slowly on the metal locker door.

Three quiet knocks.

A deep voice came from outside.

"We know you found the file."

"Hand over the little girl..."

May you like

"...and maybe the three of you will live."
