CHAPTER 5 — The Little Girl They Were Willing to Kill For

The storage locker fell completely silent.

Emily instinctively pulled Lily behind her.

Ethan grabbed the heavy metal pipe leaning against the wall, his eyes locked on the door.

Three more knocks.

Then a voice.

"Mr. Caldwell... your father protected this secret for thirty years."

"You don't want to make the same mistake."

The lock suddenly clicked.

The door slowly rolled upward.

Five men in black tactical suits stood outside.

No badges.

No names.

Only matching silver pins shaped like a raven.

The leader smiled.

"We're here for the child."

Ethan stepped forward.

"You're leaving without her."

The man sighed.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

Within seconds, the hallway exploded into chaos.

Two bodyguards Ethan had secretly called arrived from the parking lot. Gunfire echoed through the warehouse as everyone rushed for cover.

Ethan grabbed Emily's hand.

"Run!"

The three of them escaped through a side exit while the fight continued behind them.

Minutes later, they reached an abandoned church outside the city—a place only Ethan and Emily had known years ago.

Lily finally asked the question no one wanted to answer.

"Mommy..."

"Why do they want me?"

Emily couldn't hold back her tears anymore.

She looked at Ethan.

"It's time."

She reached into her backpack and removed a small wooden box.

Inside...

Was Lily's birth certificate.

But it wasn't the one Ethan had seen before.

There was another page underneath.

An adoption record.

Ethan frowned.

"This can't be right."

Emily nodded.

"I never gave birth to Lily."

The world seemed to stop.

Ethan looked from the document to the little girl sleeping against his shoulder.

"What are you saying?"

Emily whispered,

"She isn't our biological daughter..."

"...but I promised her mother I would protect her with my life."

Ethan felt his heart sink.

"Who was her mother?"

Emily slowly unfolded an old newspaper clipping.

The headline read:

'SENATOR'S DAUGHTER DISAPPEARS HOURS AFTER GIVING BIRTH.'

The photo underneath showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.

Ethan's blood turned cold.

He recognized her immediately.

Sophia Harrington.

The woman who had exposed corruption involving some of the richest and most powerful families in America...

...just days before she mysteriously vanished.

Emily looked Ethan straight in the eyes.

"Lily isn't just an orphan."

"She's the only living witness to a conspiracy worth billions of dollars."

Before Ethan could speak...

His phone vibrated.

One new message.

No number.

No name.

Only a live video.

On the screen...

Victoria was sitting in a prison interrogation room.

She looked directly into the camera and whispered,

"I lied."

"I never worked for Richard Caldwell..."

"I worked for someone much higher."

Then the camera slowly turned.

A man stepped into the frame.

Ethan's face went completely white.

Because the man smiling at the camera...

May you like

...had been standing beside him as his best man at the wedding only hours earlier.
