chapter 1

Emily Carter had walked past hundreds of homeless people in her life.

She had trained herself not to look.

Not because she was cruel—but because New York had taught her that stopping for everyone would break your heart.

That Tuesday afternoon, dressed in a cream business suit and expensive heels, she was rushing toward the biggest meeting of her career.

Then...

Clink.

One of her gold earrings slipped from her hand and landed beside a small pile of coins on the sidewalk.

A little boy, no older than seven, quickly picked it up.

His hoodie was torn.

His sneakers had holes.

His face was dirty, but his eyes...

His eyes were strangely calm.

"You dropped this," he whispered.

Emily smiled politely and reached into her purse.

She placed several dollar bills beside his tiny collection of coins.

"Buy yourself something warm."

The boy didn't touch the money.

Instead, he quietly asked,

"Do you remember my mom?"

Emily froze.

"What?"

"You used to work with her."

She frowned.

"I'm sorry... I think you've mistaken me for someone else."

The boy slowly reached into his pocket and unfolded an old photograph.

Emily's hands began to shake.

It was a company Christmas party from eight years ago.

She was standing beside her former assistant, Sarah.

The same Sarah who had suddenly disappeared after being accused of stealing millions from the company.

No one had ever seen her again.

The little boy pointed at the smiling woman in the photo.

"That's my mom."

Emily felt the blood drain from her face.

"She never stole anything," the boy continued.

"She told me... if I ever found you, I should give you this."

He handed Emily a tiny silver key attached to a faded blue ribbon.

No explanation.

No note.

Just one key.

Emily stared at it, confused.

"Where did your mother go?"

The boy looked away.

"They took her."

"They?"

"The people who own your company now."

Emily laughed nervously.

"That's impossible."

Her company had been sold six years ago to one of the most powerful investment groups in America.

Their executives were respected.

Admired.

Untouchable.

The boy leaned closer and whispered something that made Emily's knees nearly buckle.

"They're watching you right now."

She instinctively looked across the street.

A black SUV sat parked with its engine running.

Its windows were completely tinted.

The moment she looked...

The SUV slowly pulled away.

Emily turned back to ask another question.

But the boy...

...was gone.

Only the old photograph and the silver key remained on the sidewalk.

That evening, unable to ignore the growing fear inside her, Emily searched through old company records.

Sarah's employee file had vanished.

Every email they had ever exchanged...

Deleted.

Even stranger...

Security records showed that Sarah had never worked there at all.

As Emily sat frozen in front of her computer, her office phone suddenly rang.

An unfamiliar voice calmly said,

"You should have kept walking."

Then the line went dead.

Emily looked down at the silver key.

Engraved on its side were four tiny words she had never noticed before.

OPEN LOCKER 317. MIDNIGHT. ALONE.

She had no idea that opening that locker would expose a conspiracy worth billions...

May you like

...or that someone had already decided she would never leave alive.
