CHAPTER 3: THE WOMAN THEY BURIED WASN'T SARAH… IT WAS THE FIRST PERSON WHO REFUSED TO STAY SILENT

The entire executive floor froze.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Sarah Carter slowly removed her sunglasses and placed the gunmetal briefcase on the conference table.

Emily couldn't believe what she was seeing.

"You're... alive."

Sarah smiled faintly.

"Barely."

Emily's boss, Richard Holloway, let out a cold laugh.

"This is impossible."

"No," Sarah replied. "The impossible part... is that you thought I'd never come back."

Richard subtly pressed a hidden panic button beneath the table.

Within seconds, armed security officers flooded the hallway.

"Arrest her," Richard ordered.

"For corporate espionage."

But none of the guards moved.

Instead, their captain stepped forward.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Holloway..."

"...our orders changed ten minutes ago."

Richard's confident smile disappeared.

"What?"

The captain held up an official federal warrant.

"You are under investigation for fraud, conspiracy, witness tampering, attempted murder, and laundering more than three billion dollars."

The room exploded into chaos.

Executives rushed for the exits.

Lawyers grabbed their phones.

Several board members quietly walked away from Richard as if they had never known him.

Richard slowly backed toward the window.

"You have nothing."

Sarah calmly unlocked the briefcase.

Inside were dozens of encrypted hard drives.

Original contracts.

Hidden bank accounts.

Video recordings.

Every crime.

Every payment.

Every betrayal.

Emily looked through the files until one folder stopped her cold.

It was labeled:

PROJECT PHOENIX.

She opened it.

Inside was her own employee file.

Except...

It wasn't hers.

It was her adoption record.

Emily's hands began to shake.

She looked at Sarah.

"What... is this?"

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"The truth I promised your mother I'd protect."

Richard suddenly shouted,

"Don't tell her!"

But it was already too late.

Sarah took a deep breath.

"Emily..."

"You were never hired because you were talented."

"You were hired because they wanted to keep watching you."

Emily felt the room spinning.

"What are you talking about?"

Sarah slowly pulled another photograph from the briefcase.

It showed two little girls playing together in a backyard twenty-eight years earlier.

One was Sarah.

The other...

was Emily.

Emily stared at the picture.

"I... don't remember this."

"You wouldn't."

"The fire erased almost everything."

Sarah's voice cracked.

"The explosion that supposedly killed your parents..."

"...was never an accident."

Richard screamed,

"Stop talking!"

But federal agents had already surrounded him.

Sarah continued.

"Your father created evidence proving the company's founders were financing organized crime."

"When he refused to destroy it..."

"They murdered him."

Emily could barely breathe.

"And my mother?"

Sarah looked away.

"She died protecting you."

Silence filled the room.

Then the little boy gently took Emily's hand.

"You've been my family your whole life..."

"...you just didn't know it."

Tears streamed down Emily's face.

Richard suddenly shoved an agent aside and sprinted toward the emergency staircase.

The building erupted into panic.

Agents chased after him.

Seconds later...

A gunshot echoed through the tower.

Then another.

Everyone ran toward the stairs.

Richard was gone.

Only a trail of blood led to an open service exit.

On the floor lay one abandoned satellite phone.

It suddenly rang.

Sarah answered.

A distorted voice whispered only one sentence.

"Richard was never the one in charge."

The line went dead.

Sarah slowly looked at Emily.

Her face turned pale.

"There are twelve more people above him."

Emily frowned.

"Twelve?"

Sarah nodded.

"They call themselves..."

The Circle.

May you like

"And they've known your name since the day you were born."
