CHAPTER 5: THE NATION CALLED HER "AMERICA'S GRANDMOTHER"... BUT SHE WAS THE MONSTER WHO DESTROYED HER OWN FAMILY

Emily couldn't breathe.

The elegant woman smiling on the screen was the same grandmother who had tucked her into bed as a child...

The same woman who donated billions to children's hospitals...

The same woman every television station called "The Kindest Woman in America."

"Evelyn..." Emily whispered.

"...why?"

The elderly woman smiled gently.

"Because kindness is the greatest disguise ever invented."

The screen went black.

No one in the room spoke.

Sarah slowly sat down, exhausted.

"I prayed you'd never learn the truth."

Emily turned to her.

"You knew?"

Sarah nodded.

"For twenty years."

"Then tell me everything."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"Your grandfather built the Carter Foundation to save lives."

"When he died, Evelyn inherited everything."

"But she wanted more than money."

"She wanted control."

She secretly recruited politicians, billionaires, judges, media executives, and corporate leaders.

One by one...

They formed The Circle.

Anyone who exposed them disappeared.

Journalists.

Police officers.

Judges.

Even members of their own families.

Emily's father was different.

He refused to join.

"He said no one should own the future of an entire country."

Sarah's voice trembled.

"That's why Evelyn signed his death warrant."

Emily felt as if the floor had vanished beneath her.

"My own grandmother..."

Sarah nodded.

"She ordered the explosion herself."

The little boy quietly placed another folder in front of Emily.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Emily stared at it.

Then looked again.

Her eyes widened.

"My birthday..."

"It's wrong."

Sarah whispered,

"Yes."

"They changed everything."

"Your birthday."

"Your name."

"Even your identity."

Emily wasn't actually Emily Carter.

She had lived her entire life under a false identity created by The Circle.

Before she could process it...

A loud alarm echoed throughout the safe house.

One of the federal agents burst into the room.

"They found us!"

"How?"

Sarah immediately understood.

She looked at Emily's phone.

"It's the phone!"

Emily frowned.

"What?"

Sarah grabbed it.

Behind the battery case was something no larger than a grain of rice.

A military-grade tracking chip.

Emily's heart stopped.

"They've always known where I was..."

Sarah nodded.

"Since you were five years old."

The agent shouted,

"Vehicles incoming!"

Everyone rushed to the windows.

More than twenty black SUVs surrounded the building.

Dozens of armed men stepped out.

But they weren't wearing masks.

They wore FBI jackets.

Emily stared in disbelief.

"They're federal agents..."

Sarah slowly shook her head.

"No."

"They're Circle agents."

"They've been inside the FBI for years."

Within seconds, explosions rocked the building.

Smoke filled every hallway.

The little boy grabbed Emily's hand.

"We have to go!"

They escaped through an underground maintenance tunnel that Sarah had prepared years earlier.

As they reached the other side of the city, Emily looked back.

The entire safe house exploded into flames.

Every news channel arrived within minutes.

By sunrise...

Every television station in America reported the same headline:

"FUGITIVE SARAH CARTER KILLED IN EXPLOSION. ACCOMPLICE EMILY CARTER WANTED FOR TERRORISM."

Emily stared at the screen in horror.

"They're blaming us."

Sarah quietly removed a small flash drive from inside her jacket.

"No..."

"They're hunting us."

Emily looked at the drive.

"What's on it?"

Sarah answered with one sentence that changed everything.

"The only copy..."

"...of The Circle's client list."

Before Emily could respond, the flash drive automatically unlocked.

One final hidden document appeared.

At the top was a single classified file.

PROJECT SUCCESSOR

Below it were the words:

Next Chairman of The Circle: EMILY CARTER

Emily's face turned white.

"What... does this mean?"

Sarah looked at her with tears in her eyes.

"It means..."

"They never wanted to kill you."

"They were raising you..."

May you like

"...to become their next leader."
