CHAPTER 1 — She Left Her Own Mother to Die... Then Drove Away Smiling

The road was so empty that even the wind sounded lonely.
Margaret Wilson, seventy-eight years old, stood beside the dusty highway with a small suitcase in one trembling hand and her cardigan wrapped tightly around her fragile body.
She couldn't understand what had just happened.
Only minutes earlier, she had believed her daughter wanted to surprise her with a peaceful weekend somewhere in the countryside.
Instead...
Her own daughter had abandoned her.
When Rebecca stopped the SUV, Margaret had smiled nervously.
"Is this the place?"
Rebecca didn't answer.
Instead, she walked around the car, opened the passenger door, grabbed the old woman's arm, and pulled her onto the gravel.
"Rebecca... sweetheart... what's wrong?"
Rebecca's eyes were cold.
"I'm tired, Mom."
"Tired?"
"Of taking care of you. Of paying your bills. Of listening to your stories. My husband is sick of you. My children don't even want you around."
Margaret's lips trembled.
"I raised you..."
"You did what every parent does."
"I loved you..."
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
"Love doesn't pay mortgages."
Margaret reached for her daughter's hand.
"Please... don't leave me here."
Rebecca stepped backward.
"You'll figure something out."
"I have nowhere to go."
"You should've thought about that before getting old."
The SUV door slammed.
Its tires threw dust into the air.
Within seconds...
Rebecca disappeared beyond the horizon without looking back once.
Silence.
Only birds.
Only wind.
Margaret slowly sank onto the roadside, tears falling onto the faded family photograph she had carried for nearly forty years.
It showed a little girl sitting on her father's shoulders.
Rebecca.
The same little girl Margaret had worked three jobs to feed after her husband died.
She had skipped meals.
Sold her wedding ring.
Worked night shifts cleaning hospitals.
All so her daughter could become successful.
Now...
She had become disposable.
Hours passed.
The sun grew hotter.
Margaret's breathing became weaker.
She whispered softly,
"Maybe... this is where my story ends."
Then...
A black luxury limousine appeared in the distance.
It slowed.
Stopped beside her.
The rear window rolled down.
An elderly man stared at her in complete shock.
His face turned pale.
"...Margaret?"
She looked up.
Her eyes widened.
"No... It can't be..."
The man stepped out, his hands shaking.
"I've spent forty-three years looking for you."
The suitcase slipped from Margaret's hand.
Rebecca had no idea...
May you like
That abandoning her mother had just awakened a secret buried for four decades.
