CHAPTER 2: THE CAMERA DIDN’T LIE… BUT THE TRUTH WAS WORSE THAN THE THEFT

By midnight, Emily Parker was packing her life into one suitcase.

She had lost her job.

Her reputation.

And maybe her mother’s only chance to survive.

But across town, inside the Ashford mansion, the security technician stared at the frozen footage with trembling hands.

Because the person standing in the doorway…

was Margaret Ashford’s own son.

Daniel.

The golden heir.

The man everyone believed would inherit everything.

In the video, Daniel watched as the old housekeeper, Mrs. Bell, slipped the emerald into Margaret’s robe pocket.

Then he smiled.

Not a nervous smile.

Not a confused smile.

A satisfied one.

“Play it again,” Margaret whispered.

Her voice was no longer powerful.

It was broken.

The technician pressed play.

Again.

And again.

Each time, the truth became uglier.

Emily had been framed.

Margaret slowly reached into the robe she had worn that morning.

Her fingers touched something cold.

The missing emerald.

Her face turned white.

“No…”

At that exact moment, Daniel walked into the room.

Calm.

Clean.

Perfectly dressed.

“Mother,” he said softly. “You shouldn’t be watching that.”

Margaret turned toward him.

“Why?”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

For the first time in his life, he didn’t look like her son.

He looked like a stranger.

“Because Emily wasn’t supposed to leave alive with the truth.”

Margaret stepped back.

“What truth?”

Daniel looked at the emerald in her hand.

Then he said the sentence that shattered the Ashford family forever.

“Emily Parker isn’t your maid.”

He leaned closer.

“She’s my father’s daughter.”

Margaret stopped breathing.

The room went dead silent.

Twenty-three years ago, Margaret’s husband had an affair.

The woman disappeared.

The baby was never found.

And now that baby had returned…

not as a guest.

Not as an heir.

But as a servant in her own father’s house.

Daniel’s eyes darkened.

“If she proves who she is, she gets half of everything.”

Margaret gripped the emerald so tightly it cut her palm.

Outside, thunder shook the mansion windows.

And miles away, Emily received a message from an unknown number.

RUN. THEY KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

Before she could move…

someone knocked on her apartment door.

Slowly.

Three times.

Emily looked through the peephole.

And screamed.

Because standing outside…

was the man she had been told died before she was born.

May you like

Her father.
