CHAPTER 1 – The Stranger at Her Door

Margaret Dawson had lived alone for nearly twelve years.
Her husband had passed away after a long illness. Her only son had moved hundreds of miles away, building a new life with little room left for phone calls or visits. Days blended into weeks, and weeks into silent months. The only sounds that filled her apartment were the ticking of an old grandfather clock and the occasional footsteps from neighbors in the hallway.
Then, one rainy afternoon, everything changed.
A distant cousin knocked on her apartment door.
Standing beside him was a young man with tired eyes, soaked clothes, and a faded backpack hanging loosely from one shoulder.
"His name is Daniel," the cousin explained awkwardly. "He's had a rough time. Lost his parents years ago... lost his job recently... and now he has nowhere to go."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I'll leave if it's too much trouble."
Margaret looked at the young man for only a few seconds.
Something inside her heart broke.
He reminded her of her own son when he was younger—thin, shy, and carrying more sadness than someone his age should.
"Oh, nonsense," she smiled warmly.
"No one should sleep on the streets."
Within minutes she had invited him inside.
She heated leftover potato soup, fried onions in butter, and served him bread that had been sitting untouched for days.
Daniel ate slowly.
Almost too slowly.
Every few bites he quietly whispered,
"Thank you."
Margaret noticed his manners immediately.
He never asked for more than what was offered.
He insisted on washing his own dishes.
He even apologized for taking up space.
Later that evening she opened the bedroom that had belonged to her son.
Dust floated through the sunlight as she changed the sheets.
"You can stay here," she said softly.
"It's been empty for years."
Daniel stared silently at the family photographs lining the wall.
One picture caught his attention—a smiling young boy standing beside Margaret decades earlier.
"Your son?"
Margaret nodded.
"He rarely comes home anymore."
Daniel looked strangely emotional.
"I'm sorry."
That single sentence almost made Margaret cry.
Before bedtime she handed him an old sweater that had belonged to her son.
"It'll keep you warm."
Daniel accepted it carefully, almost reverently.
"I'll return it."
"No rush."
For the first time in years, laughter echoed inside the apartment.
Margaret went to bed with a peaceful heart.
Maybe God had sent this lonely young man into her life for a reason.
Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows.
Inside, silence slowly settled over the apartment.
Around two in the morning...
Margaret suddenly woke.
At first she thought it was the wind.
Then...
Creak...
One floorboard.
Another.
Slow...
Measured footsteps.
Her bedroom door...
Began opening by itself.
She froze.
A shadow appeared.
Daniel.
Standing silently in the doorway.
In his hand...
Something metallic reflected the pale moonlight.
Her heart nearly stopped.
Without making a sound, he slowly stepped toward her bed.
One...
Step.
Two...
Step.
Three...
Margaret squeezed her eyes almost shut and silently prayed.
"Dear God...
Please let me survive this night..."
Daniel stopped only inches from her pillow.
He stood completely still.
Watching her.
For almost an entire minute.
May you like
Then...
He slowly raised the object in his hand.
