CHAPTER 4 – The Hidden Safe

Margaret had no idea how she managed to run.
At seventy-three years old, her legs should never have moved that fast.
Yet fear pushed her forward.
Ethan guided her through the apartment's narrow kitchen while footsteps echoed behind them.
Whoever had entered the apartment wasn't rushing.
He walked slowly.
Confidently.
As if he already knew they had nowhere to escape.
Click...
Click...
Click...
The sound of polished shoes grew closer.
Margaret's breathing became uneven.
"Ethan... who is he?"
Ethan didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he pulled the tiny steel key from his pocket and stopped in front of an old grandfather clock.
"This clock..."
Margaret whispered.
"It hasn't worked in fifteen years."
"It was never meant to tell time."
Ethan inserted the key into a nearly invisible lock hidden beneath the clock's wooden frame.
A soft mechanical click echoed through the apartment.
Then...
The entire clock slowly swung open like a secret door.
Behind it was a narrow steel safe built into the wall.
Margaret covered her mouth.
"My husband..."
"He built it," Ethan finished.
"But he didn't build it for money."
Inside the safe sat only three things.
A dusty leather notebook.
A faded envelope.
And an old cassette tape labeled in shaky handwriting:
'If anything happens to me... trust no one.'
Margaret's heart skipped a beat.
That handwriting belonged to her late husband.
Tears welled in her eyes.
"He never told me..."
"He couldn't."
Ethan picked up the notebook carefully.
"The people chasing us murdered everyone connected to this."
Before he could open it—
A slow clap echoed from the darkness.
One.
Two.
Three.
A tall man stepped into the dim light.
Perfectly dressed.
Silver hair.
Calm smile.
He held a pistol as casually as if it were an umbrella.
"Touching reunion."
His voice was smooth.
"Unfortunately... it ends tonight."
Margaret stared at him in disbelief.
She recognized him instantly.
He wasn't a criminal.
He was Richard Hale, the respected billionaire philanthropist celebrated across the country for funding hospitals, schools, and charities.
He smiled warmly.
Exactly the same smile she had seen on television hundreds of times.
"Margaret," he said politely.
"I truly wish we'd met under happier circumstances."
Ethan slowly stepped in front of her.
"You've been lying to the entire country for five years."
Richard chuckled.
"No."
"I've been saving it."
He raised the pistol.
Then said the sentence that made Margaret's blood run cold.
"Your husband didn't die of natural causes."
May you like
"I ordered his murder."
